Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum is celebrating 25 years of inspiring children to learn through play! The Museum first opened to Boulder County families in November 1996 and has since served over 1.3 million visitors. In celebration of this milestone 25th anniversary, WOW! has launched a $25,000 fundraising campaign. Every dollar donated will be matched dollar for dollar by several generous WOW! supporters. Matching funds will provide $50,000 total in financial support and will help WOW! to continue to provide educational hands-on experiences for all children in the community.

“We are so proud to be celebrating 25 years of serving Boulder County families, and so grateful to our community for supporting this crucial match campaign,” said Joanna Cagan, Executive Director. “We feel very fortunate to have watched children grow up at WOW! over these past decades. We know that children need safe, welcoming play spaces now more than ever, and we are committed to remaining a valuable resource for all families for many years to come. After a devastating pandemic year in 2020, WOW!’s finances remain in critical shape, and so we find ourselves turning to our community to help ensure that we can continue to offer joyful, play-based learning experiences for the next generation of young children.”

To help WOW! reach the $25,000 fundraising goal and receive the matching funds, the Museum is asking families and community members to make a gift of $25 or more in honor of WOW!’s 25th Anniversary. To make a donation visit: bit.ly/WOWMatch

Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum (World of Wonder) is pleased to announce today that Joanna Cagan has been named the new Executive Director of the Museum. Joanna is an experienced non-profit manager with a demonstrated commitment to informal learning and early childhood education. For the past 3.5 years, Joanna has served as Denver Zoo’s Early Childhood Programs Manager, managing the Zoo’s onsite preschool programming, including Nurturing Scientists Through Nature Play, the Zoo’s award-winning nature play program for preschoolers, their caregivers and classroom teachers. Joanna will serve as the third leader in WOW! Children’s Museum’s 23-year history.

"I'm thrilled to be joining WOW!’s team at such an exciting time for the Museum. Now more than ever, children need community anchors -- welcoming play and learning spaces that nurture their development, their confidence, early science skills and identity. I am honored to join an organization so embedded in a terrific community, and I look forward to helping lead WOW! to continued success," said Joanna Cagan, Executive Director, WOW! Children’s Museum.

“WOW!’s Board of Directors are excited to welcome Joanna to our leadership team. Her depth of early childhood education experience combined with strong program management will be a tremendous asset to the Museum. Additionally, Joanna's passion for our mission as well as the children in our community will help cement WOW! as an informal early childhood education leader in Boulder County and beyond,” said Barbara Subercaseaux, Board President, WOW! Children’s Museum.

Ms. Cagan’s other accomplishments include training from Brookfield Zoo’s acclaimed NatureStart professional development program and completing the Lawrence Hall of Science's Reflecting on Practice professional learning program. In 2018, Joanna was selected to the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s inaugural group of national Nature Play Leaders, providing mentoring and leadership to peers at zoos and aquariums nationwide. Joanna has also served on the steering committee of the Colorado Science Education Network and served on the National Wildlife Federation's Early Childhood Health Outdoors initiative (ECHO) site selection committee. Joanna has a master’s degree in childhood education from Lehman College, part of the City University of New York, and a certificate in conservation biology from Columbia University. She graduated with honors from Rutgers College with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum (World of Wonder) is pleased to announce that the Museum has received a $30,000 grant from the Buell Foundation. This generous grant will support the growth of WOW!’s Play for All membership program, expanding access to the Museum to all families in our community. As an important component of WOW!’s broader Play for All Initiative, the Play for All membership program is designed to support families in need by providing an annual family membership to the Museum for $10. Any family receiving food assistance, Medicaid, WIC, Head Start or assistance from a social service organization qualify for a Play for All membership. In 2018, the Play for All membership program provided the gift of play to over 600 families. This grant from the Buell Foundation will allow the Museum to serve even more children and families in need in Boulder County.

“We believe in the power of play and that all children deserve a quality Museum experience regardless of a child’s ability or background. We want all young children to have the opportunity to engage in WOW!’s unique hands-on learning experiences and learn the skills they will need to succeed in school and beyond,” said Darcy Morel, Interim Executive Director. “Our Play for All membership program is made possible through the generous support of community donors. We thank the Buell Foundation for awarding WOW! this grant and for their continued dedication to the children of Colorado.”

Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum (World of Wonder) is pleased to announce that the Museum has received a $15,000 grant from the Buell Foundation. This generous grant will support a wide-range community assessment project with a focus on increasing WOW!’s services to low-income Latino families; a population that has been identified as the most at-risk in our community. The grant provides funds for program evaluation, market research, focus groups, and partnership development.

The results of the assessment project will help WOW! strengthen community connections, provide opportunities for parent education, and define creative ways to reach more at-risk students by providing subjects that children might be missing at school or at home. In addition, the assessment will help WOW! evaluate its current facility to ensure each exhibit is in alignment with the Museum’s education philosophy and to create a space that is inclusive and reflective of the community.

“WOW! Children’s Museum is committed to serving as a gathering place for all children and families in the North Metro Area. We believe that bringing diverse individuals together allows us to better understand, support and engage our community. We are working to make our Museum and our programs accessible, meaningful and welcoming to all audiences and these grant funds help support that work,” said Jennifer Hinderliter, Executive Director.

The grant supports the successful implementation of the Museum’s Learning Framework, by providing general operating support.
“We are committed to strengthening early childhood development and believe that informal educational experiences offered at the Museum play a unique role in a child’s development. Since late 2017, we have updated our mission, vision and values and clearly defined our educational philosophy. We created a Learning Framework to guide all future program and exhibit development; and we hired a Director of Early Childhood Education to weave this educational philosophy into everything we do. This grant from The Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Colorado will support the transition as we align our Museum exhibits with the new Learning Framework and continue to deliver fun and creative learning experiences for children and families,” said Jennifer Hinderliter, Executive Director.

Lafayette, Colorado – WOW! Children’s Museum is pleased to announce that the Museum has received a $33,780 Museums for America federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This grant will enable WOW! to fabricate, install, and evaluate Forest of Light, a new inclusive exhibit that encourages play between young children of all abilities. Forest of Light will be welcoming and engaging for both neurotypical children and those with autism or sensory processing disorders, and will educate parents and caregivers on the benefits of sensory rich environments for child development. Forest of Light is scheduled to open at WOW! in Summer 2018.

“Forest of Light developed from the popularity of our Sensory Friendly Playtime program. This is a private time for children with autism spectrum or sensory processing disorders to enjoy the museum with their families. Admission is limited and lights and sounds are turned down to create a calmer environment than the typical Museum experience. The popularity of the Playtimes as well as feedback from Museum visitors, indicated a community need for a sensory friendly space within the Museum. Having a calm, quiet play space will benefit all children who may become overstimulated during their Museum visit. We worked with local occupational therapists who provided valuable feedback on activities that would be engaging for all children and the Forest of Light concept emerged,” said Jennifer Hinderliter, Executive Director, WOW! Children’s Museum.

The Museums for America grant program supports projects that strengthen the ability of an individual museum to serve its public. The program’s three project categories are learning experiences, community anchors, and collections stewardship. This year IMLS received 558 applications requesting $104,538,159. Of these, IMLS selected 132 projects to receive funding totaling $19,189,929. WOW! Children’s Museum is one of four museums in Colorado to receive a 2017 Museums for America grant.

“We are so grateful to IMLS for seeing the merit in Forest of Light and providing funding to make the exhibit a reality. The IMLS grant funds, combined with $20,000 from the Dodge Family Fund covers 73% of the funding needed for the total project. We will continue to fundraise for the remaining $20,000 and hope that individuals and organizations from the community will pledge their financial support for this meaningful new Museum experience,” said Jennifer Hinderliter.

“Museums for America is instrumental in helping museums of all disciplines, all sizes, and all budgets across the country address opportunities identified by their organization as central to achieving their missions,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “It is humbling to read the many applications about the varied ways museums are improving quality of life in communities large and small, and responsibly caring for culturally significant objects.”
