In 1971, John Langstaff founded the Revels in Cambridge, Massachusetts to link the music, dances, and seasonal rituals from an older world to a modern world that needs them. The Christmas Revels became a Boston-area tradition and spread across the country. In 2000, Rocky Mountain Revels started up in Boulder.

2011 Christmas Revels
Leonardo and the Renaissance
In Celebration of the Winter Solstice

It's a late December afternoon in Florence, circa 1500, and the famous inventor and artist Leonardo da Vinci has issued invitations to an evening of festivities. Nobles are arriving from across Italy to see what surprises await.

There are a lot of Christmas shows every year. Revels is a little different. We celebrate traditional folk music, dance, and drama. We have audience participation, we have professionals and amateurs and children and adults and live music and costumes, and we are fun!

We're also a Winter Solstice show. Where else could you go to see not just Christmas carols, but also mummer's plays, Morris dancing, choral and instrumental music, ancient ritualistic dances, folklore and storytelling, and poetry, all in one place?

Revels recognizes the fascinating ways that people through the ages have connected with the seasons, and how they turned the cold and darkness into cause for celebrations which draw communities together. The Christmas Revels glories in the way that Christmas traditions are part of and blended with these older traditions.

Each year we commemorate the shortest day in the setting of a different time and place. This year we will go to Renaissance Italy. Please join us!

Welcome Yule and Buon Natale!
