Lafayette, CO (October 2012):  The development over three short years of a thriving residential school in Tanzania educating vulnerable girls to change their world has a growth challenge, one in which two Boulder County connections are offering support. Boulder-based Engineers Without Borders has advised the school on installing a campus-wide rainwater capture system to alleviate the increased cost of potable water and a group of inspired Boulder County volunteers are now hoping to raise the remaining funds to bring it to them.

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of Nurturing Minds is hosting its 4th Annual African Evening on Saturday, October 27th in Boulder as a benefit for the Sega Girls School in Tanzania. This year’s target goal is “Kumata Mvua” which means “Capture the Rain” in Swahili as they help raise money for the new campus self-sustainable equipment. The event also hopes to continue its support of Sega’s student sponsorship program. For each dollar donated to Nurturing Minds, 92 cents goes to the Sega Girls School.

Nurturing Minds and its partner, the Sega Girls School, began in 2008 to develop their mission of educating and empowering Tanzanian girls to give them, their families, and their communities a pathway out of poverty. Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world and girls are denied things considered basic rights in the U.S. Why? Limited education.

Nurturing Minds Board Member and founder of the Rocky Mountain Chapter Ashley Devery visited the school in Morogoro, Tanzania this past summer. “The school today has 140 students, solar electricity, a chicken business and a bustling campus that not only includes school, but extracurricular activities such as debate club, art club, a soccer team, and more – unbelievable!,” says Devery. They hope to grow to 200 girls by 2015 and be financially self-sustaining by 2019.

Join the movement to work on behalf of a worldwide effort to combat poverty through educating  a girl. It’s a global need that community supporters say “you can almost touch and feel” from here at home in Colorado.
