Boulder’s Historic Hannah Barker House Needs Your Help!

Boulder, CO – During the weekends of June 14th – 16th, June 20th – 23rd, and June 27th – 30th, the Hanna Barker House, one of the oldest buildings in Boulder, will receive some much needed TLC from local volunteers.

As part of a larger, multi-phased project to stabilize the building, Historic Boulder, Inc. and HistoriCorps are teaming up to rehabilitate the building’s front porch. Volunteers will learn to evaluate and repair or replace joists under the porch floor; replace porch rafters; repoint brickwork; remove existing layers of roofing and install new shingle roof; and restore original wood columns, arches, and decorative features.

Hannah Connell Barker and her husband Ezra K. Barker purchased the house in 1877, but Ezra died in 1883, leaving Hannah with his landholdings and wealth. For the next 40 years, the house was home to Hannah Barker, one of the most significant pioneer women in Boulder, serving as a community leader in a time when women’s contributions were often unrecognized and lost to historical record. Over the last several decades, the Hannah Barker House has fallen into disrepair, but thanks to local residents eager to make a difference, the building will live on as an important piece of Boulder’s history.

Your help is needed to save this important historic landmark and tell the story of Hannah Barker, one of the most influential pioneer women in Boulder!  The project will be managed and supervised by two HistoriCorps instructors and will be designed to optimize learning opportunities. Volunteer spots will be held for residents of Boulder County through the month of May. A minimum commitment of 2 days is required to volunteer (8:30 am - 5 pm), but those who volunteer for the full session (3 or 4 days, depending on the session) will get first priority. Tools, safety equipment, and lunches will be provided. To register, please contact Amy Eller at aeller@historicorps.org. 303-893-4260 x 225. We look forward to hearing from you!
