City of Longmont

The September 2013 flood significantly impacted Longmont's river ecosystems. City of Longmont's Open Space staff has been busy assessing damage to vegetation along the creek corridors, which plays an important role in water quality, erosion control and habitat. Many areas need help re-establishing native vegetation to bring them back to healthy, weed free environments. In order to facilitate this, Open Space staff is developing a small nursery to grow native plant species. And, that's where an industrious, young Scout joined in to help.

For his Eagle Scout project, Isaac Boden of Boy Scout Troop 64 partnered with Open Space staff to construct a much needed shade structure for the nursery. Boden spearheaded the effort by getting donations from Lowe's and Budget Home Center, eliciting help from other troop members and their parents, and overseeing the project through coordination to completion. Boden has been in Scouts for over 10 years and is currently a senior at Skyline High School.

The new shade structure will allow city staff to propagate and store native plant materials, as well as provide shade for seedlings. Once ready, these plants will be utilized on open space lands which have been impacted by the flood or are in need of restoration. Planting native Colorado species is essential to managing noxious weeds and improving the quality of wildlife habitat, which dictates a healthier ecosystem.
