Dawson School in Lafayette, the region's premier K-12 independent school, held its first-annual Apple-Picking event Thursday, Sept. 11, with students and teachers across grades participating to harvest the bounty.

Dawson has an 18-year tradition of planting fruit trees on campus — many the result of first-grade bake sale proceeds — and the trees are bearing significantly this season. In addition, a 2-plus acre orchard was planted last year, which will be used in future harvests.

The activity is part of Dawson's commitment to outdoor, experiential education. The yield is being used in multiple ways, from first-grade art and "shrunken head" science projects, to Upper School chemistry pH testing, to baked cinnamon apples and apple/jicama salad in the dining hall. Here, members of kindergarten, third grade and seventh grade team up for some apple-picking fun.
