Lake Valley Golf Club

Often known as the best kept golf secret in Boulder County, Lake Valley Golf Club is proudly celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer. The private golf-only club has a long and storied history and is yet still unknown to many area golfers including those who have lived here since the course was first fully opened in 1965. But for those few hundred folks who have or will soon discover the club and its Persimmon Grill, which is open to the public, the search is well worth the effort.

Originally conceived as Foothills Golf Club, Lake Valley Golf Course is located east of U.S. 36 just north of Boulder off Neva/Niwot road and is the centerpiece of the Lake Valley and North Rim neighborhoods which were developed in the 80s and 90s. Foothills was supposed to have not only featured a golf course but a luxurious clubhouse, stables, a swimming pool and numerous other amenities.

Few of the amenities materialized other than the golf course which was designed by Colorado Golf Hall of Fame architect J. Press Maxwell who also had a hand in designing or remodeling over 30 golf courses including Boulder Country Club, Cherry Hills, Hiwan, and Augusta National. The golf course and its modest clubhouse instead became Lake Valley Golf Course, a daily fee, which played host to numerous corporate leagues (IBM, Ball Aerospace, etc.), the annual Hale Irwin Invitational won by numerous golfers of local fame (Dale Douglass, Les Fowler, etc.), and almost 35,000 rounds each year from the mid-70's until 2000 when Lake Valley Golf Club became private. A new award-winning clubhouse was then built along with many improvements to the golf course.

Now, with a robust membership and only about 20,000 rounds played per year the club's members and their guests are treated to outstanding course conditioning and a brisk pace of play year round.

In honor of this milestone, the club is celebrating all season long with course trivia contests, giveaways, historical displays and a mid-60's theme golf tournament and party scheduled for mid July. Lake Valley G.C. will also be opening the golf course up to 50 non-member twosomes a month to showcase the club to those who might not have had the chance to experience it. Each month, the first 50 folks who register on the club's website, www.lakevalley.com will have the opportunity to purchase a gift certificate good for a twosome with carts (Monday through Thursday, weekends and holidays after 1 p.m. Good during 2015) for $50 per player.

At age 50, things are certainly different at Lake Valley then they were when Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated fame first wrote "Missing Links," a story about "Ponky," a fictional golf course loosely based on Lake Valley and the "Goons," a now legendary group of guys, some of whom are still enjoying the club and course today.
