The judges have convened and the results are in! Hundreds of local citizens came out for the Fourth Annual Longmont Legends Awards and Community Celebration last Friday, Oct. 10 at Left Hand Brewing Company. The Longmont Legends Awards are presented to everyday heroes that have shown outstanding care for and dedication to the Longmont community. The 2014 Longmont Legends winners are:

  • Legendary Community Personality:  Dale Rademacher, Director of Longmont Public Works
  • Legendary Volunteer: Brett Martinez
  • Legendary Business:  Longmont Meals on Wheels
  • Legendary Senior(s): Lee and Beverly Springer, Community Volunteers

During the months leading up to the event, residents and friends of the Longmont community submitted their Longmont Legends nominations in the four categories, and winners were chosen by a community panel.

This year, that panel included Scott Cook, Event and Program Director at the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce; Dan Benavidez, a longtime community leader and activist in Longmont; Carol Thompson, the Volunteer Manager at BCCC and a Longmont resident; and Luke Kunselman, a Longmont mortgage broker and lender. Kunselman also served as the emcee for the award ceremony.

Over 40 individuals and businesses were nominated for the award, and all had shown extraordinary dedication to the Longmont community. “There were many times we were torn because there were so many outstanding nominees,” said Thompson. “There were a couple categories where I really wish we could have given out more than one award.” Thompson also mentioned how honored many of the nominees were, with some saying it was their first time being recognized for their service.

In addition to the award announcements, the event featured a catered meal by Savoy Catering, live music from the Lap Dawgs, karaoke from Timberline Entertainment and Events, and a drawing for gift baskets with hundreds of items from Boulder County businesses. The event was also made possible by dozens of generous community sponsors including Dignity Care, Atria Longmont, Always Best Care, Coffee and Connections, Instant Imprints, Gebhardt Automotive, Carroll-Lewellen Funeral and Cremation Services, Yvonne Fromm Photography, Left Hand Brewing Company, and the Longmont Times-Call.

All proceeds benefitted Boulder County CareConnect (BCCC), the 42-year old nonprofit that provides safety net services to seniors and adults with disabilities in Boulder County.
