On Tuesday, Aug. 12, the Longmont Rotary Club welcomed some very special guests to speak about their experiences this summer with the RYLA program. RYLA, short for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, is a program that originated with Rotary International and has subsequently been designed by Rotary Districts 5440 and 5450 for students in the Denver metro area and Front Range region.

RYLA encourages servant leadership in youths by recognizing and rewarding deserving middle and high school students who are chosen to attend RYLA as an “award” for their past and present leadership and service activities. These select young people attend an all-expenses-paid camp where they are inspired by a diverse group of exceptional speakers, make lifelong friends through fellowship activities, and discuss the social and ethical issues in today’s world. These activities are conducted in an atmosphere of trust and respect. The result is that these students return to their schools and communities motivated to assume additional leadership roles and to find additional ways to serve.

The Longmont, Twin Peaks and St. Vrain Rotary Clubs partner to interview and select award recipients for the RYLA and Young RYLA programs. Recipients for Young RYLA are selected from middle schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District. Recipients for RYLA are selected from Longmont, Skyline and Silver Creek High Schools. Clubs from surrounding communities select candidates from the other schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District.

This year, the three Longmont Rotary Clubs selected seven middle school students and seven high school students to participate in the annual RYLA and Young RYLA program.
