Lyons Elementary School All School Field Trip to The Wild Animal Sanctuary

The Lyons Elementary School PTO recently sponsored an all school field trip to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, CO.  On October 9, 2014, 358 students, 39 staff members, and 73 parent chaperones boarded 7 buses and headed to the 720 acre animal sanctuary for a 2 hour guided tour of the grounds.  The Wild Animal Sanctuary is home to over 350 animals such as tigers, African lions, black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, leopards, wolves, and more.  Its mission is "to rescue captive large carnivores who have been abused, abandoned, illegally kept or exploited; to create for them a wonderful life for as long as they live; and to educate about the causes and solutions to the Captive Wildlife Crisis."

The opportunity to create an all school learning event is very exciting from a cultural and academic perspective.  Every classroom has developed lessons that align with the District and Common Core Standards.  Each classroom is investigating, discovering, and will be sharing their learning with the rest of the school by posting a final work sample in the hallways.  We will have students circulate throughout the building exploring one another's work.  We are very excited to have the opportunity to share a positive experience with the entire school population and communicate with one another through the lens of our academic studies.                                                                                                                                                                        --Andrew Moore, Lyons Elementary Principal

We look forward to integrating these writing assignments to help The Wild Animal Sanctuary after the field trip. Once our learnings are complete, we will mail the assignments to The Wild Animal Sanctuary where they will use this work to obtain funding for their Education Program.

The Lyons Elementary School PTO was able to fund this incredible all school opportunity through annual fundraisers like the Jogathon and the Silent Auction as well as applying for a grant.  The students did an initial donation drive to gather much needed items to take to the sanctuary and will be celebrating Make A Difference Day on October 25 with another donation drive for the sanctuary after their post field trip experience.
