There are not many people in this world who would jump out of a perfectly good airplane, but the Longmont YMCA found three Y supporters who did!

Meca Delgado, Bobby King and Rich Marsh went skydiving on July 18, 2014, at Mile-Hi Skydiving Center in support of the Y’s youth development programs. The Mile-Hi Jump for the Y campaign was a kick-off event for the Longmont YMCA’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education program and a youth aviation-education series. The three jumpers received more than $1,300 from more than a dozen contributors.

“It was an amazing experience. It was even more exciting and rewarding knowing that what I was about to do would support the youth at the Longmont YMCA. I hope I set an example to always live life, challenge yourself, and do your best,” said Meca Delgado after landing safely on the ground.

The Jump set the stage for the Y’s commitment to helping the city’s youth improve their interest in STEM-related topics while attending camp or after school programs.

“Our children are our future. We should be doing everything that we can to ensure their future success,” said Bobby King, Chief Human Resources Officer for the City of Longmont.

The Longmont YMCA recognizes that creating a system where business, nonprofit and education communities can work together, will undoubtedly enhance the way Longmont’s students learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. There were many sponsors for this event that will help the Y purchase education-related materials and fund scholarships for low-income students to attend STEM-related programs.

In addition, there were local organizations willing to reach out to our students. Some of the YMCA students were able to tour the Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center in Longmont and others got to enjoy a great airport presentation from the Vance Brand Airport Manager, Tim Barth

The Mile-Hi Jump for the Y campaign had great success in bringing together one community to support one great cause: the future success of out community’s children.

When asked about his skydiving experience, Rich Marsh replied, “Aside from the awesome personal experience, the wider reality for me is community. This would not have happened but for the community that organized around the jump.”

The event would not have been possible without our many sponsors: The Bagley Law Firm, Meca Delgado, FAA Union, Stevan Kukic, Rich Marsh, Thomas Marsh, Mile-Hi Skydiving Center, Marty Quigley, Elvira Ramos, Saddleback Design, Dave Seely, Michael Smith, Thomas Starnes and Sunflower Bank. As a result of their generosity, $1,370 will be contributed to Y STEM programs.

“Our youth are amazing and they are all our futures, we need to do more to support them help them be successful and be prepared for the 21st century” said Delgado.
