Monarch DECA's CU Invitational Provides Valuable Practice for Local DECA Chapters

While most teachers and students were enjoying a day off for the Columbus Day holiday, students from Monarch High School’s DECA club arrived at CU’s Folsom Field Stadium Club at 6 am to host the Second Annual Monarch DECA CU Invitational.

In a single day, Monarch welcomed over 500 students and over 30 judges and had them compete in DECA role-plays, which present hypothetical, real-world business situations to the students.  With only 10 minutes to read and prepare, the students then met with a judge in their event who acted out the situation with them.  Once the role-play was over, the judges gave valuable advice to the students, helping them improve their speaking skills, improve the organization and creativity of their response, and even such little things as dressing professionally and having a good handshake to start.  Different events included such topics as Principles of Business Management and Administration, Business Law and Ethics, Travel and Tourism, and Sports and Entertainment Marketing, among many others.

By early afternoon the same day, the judges turned in their paperwork, scores were tallied, and Closing Ceremonies were held, where students were awarded first, second, and third place plaques.  Ribbons were given to students who made the top seven but didn’t place in the top three.

In November, these students will compete in their District competitions.  If they do well there, they can move up into the State competition, and then perhaps go all the way to the DECA International Career Development Conference, which this year will be held in Orlando, FL.  Invitationals such as Monarch’s provide students from area schools an opportunity to practice, gauge their skill level, and evaluate where they need improvement before the District competitions.

One of the things that made the CU Invitational so special was the amazing view of the flatirons from the various rooms that the role-plays were held in.

"The opportunity to role-play in meeting rooms with couches and coffee tables overlooking Folsom Field was really unique. It made it feel official, and I had a really good experience,” said a student from Cherokee Trail High School.

Dana Anderson, Monarch DECA’s advisor, summed up the day best:  "I love that Monarch hosts this event because it provides a great learning opportunity for all students involved. Our chapter officers get the opportunity to plan a real event, while all the competing students get to practice life skills in beautiful surroundings while creating and building their connections to college life and CU."
