-Construction leader celebrates milestone by launching “Discovery Builders” educational initiative -

Denver, CO –  To commemorate its 70 years in Colorado, Swinerton Builders launched Discovery Builders, a six-week educational program designed to expand awareness about the career opportunities available in the fields of  construction, architecture, and engineering.  Each week, students at The Academy, a charter school in Adams 12 Five Star Schools, gained insight about a new aspect of the industry from Swinerton employees and experts in architecture and engineering.

The students learned how to design and build a structure – a replica of the Four Seasons Hotel constructed out of canned food. The luxury hotel in downtown Denver is one of Swinerton’s landmark projects and the food used to construct the building was donated to Community Food Share for distribution to those in need.

“This project offered students the chance to broaden their understanding of how to apply their math and science skills to solve problems we face daily in the construction industry,” said Julie Spencer, Swinerton manager of business development.  “Through this educational effort, we were also able to contribute to the fight against hunger.”

Students, Swinerton employees and industry partners completed the build-out of the canned food structure on October 14. The completed building was unveiled on October 15, 2012 at the Four Seasons Hotel.

During its 70-year tenure, Swinerton Builders has provided construction services for multi-family/residential developments, hospitality projects, federal/military installations, mission critical facilities as well as higher education and healthcare projects, such as the Lowenstein Theater Development on East Colfax, and One Lincoln Park in downtown Denver.  When Swinerton started in Colorado, one of its first projects was building the now 60-year-old Denver Coliseum.

“We’ve helped many local public entities develop the facilities they need to accommodate expanding populations; we’ve built new corporate campuses and offices for some of the area’s most prominent employers – including Google and Avaya Communications, and we’ve constructed large federal projects at Peterson, Schriever and Buckley Air Force Bases,” said Scott Conrad, Swinerton’s Colorado division manager and vice president.
Conrad said the company’s success in Colorado is due to the strong partnerships it has built with clients and the work of its highly skilled staff. Some Swinerton employees have spent their entire careers with the company and have passed on their deep knowledge by mentoring new team members throughout the years. The company is also expanding its capabilities by increasing its professional staff by 20 percent this year.
