Pope selected after national search to lead Boulder County nonprofit dedicated to empowering women and eliminating racism.

BOULDER, Colo., January 11, 2018 —YWCA Boulder County today announced the hiring of its new chief executive officer, Debbie Pope.  Chosen by the Board of Directors after an extensive national search, Pope is chartered with leading its services and planning for the organization’s future as it approaches its 100-year anniversary in Boulder County.

Pope comes to the role with an extensive background in nonprofit leadership. As the Executive VP of the National MS Society, Pope was responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s community and donor engagement to raise awareness of the organization and support dramatic resource growth over her 17-year tenure.

Pope has been a strong advocate through her career in supporting the critical social issues that the YWCA is focused on solving: empowering women, eliminating racism, and tackling social justice issues such as poverty and homelessness of women and children.   She has worked to bring awareness to the rising number of homeless women and children and to fight for the rights of impoverished families as well as those affected by unjust laws and policies.

YWCA in 2018

YWCA is a well-known nonprofit in Boulder County, providing services for women, children, and families with programs such as its sliding fee emergency drop-in childcare program,  Children’s Alley, and Latina achievement programs in Boulder County High Schools.  Reading to End Racism is a YWCA racial justice program that reaches thousands of grade school and middle school children each year. YWCA also provides parenting classes and career advancement counseling and training.

“The YWCA Board and donors are thrilled to have Debbie stepping into this leadership role,” said Sue Fagan, YWCA Board President.  “Our mission is more critical than ever as the gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ grows ever wider, and a livable wage for a family of four here takes almost $80,000 a year.  Debbie brings strong leadership skills, a passion for our mission, and a global view of what it takes to be relevant as a nonprofit in today’s world.  We’re looking forward to the renewed vision we know she will help us shape.”

“The incredible positive impact achieved when women are empowered is inspiring and an unstoppable force,” said Debbie Pope, incoming CEO, YWCA Boulder County.  “The YWCA has transformed countless lives by giving women and families the support needed to create meaningful impact in their lives. I am energized by the honor to lead this organization and engage our incredible Boulder County community to be a leader in strengthening our work to empower women and eliminate racism.”

The year 2022 will be a milestone for YWCA in Boulder County, marking the organization’s 100-year anniversary for this chapter.  “We are thrilled to be working with Debbie Pope toward the goal of increasing our impact in Boulder County now and into the next 100 years,” added Fagan.
