COMFORTABLE DRAMA – A SPACIOUS NEW ENTRY AND VERANDA Carelli’s of Boulder Remodel

You’ll notice the changes as soon as you approach the floor-to-ceiling glass entrance, which can now be accessed from two sides. The hostess area is more spacious with a waiting area for diners. But what you’ll notice even more is the 2000 pound, seven feet in diameter wrought iron Roman numeral clock sculpture set into the wall tiled with Manatou slate. It is open on both sides letting the natural light into the dinning room. The clock is also a wine display with the sunlight glistening off the stacks of reds and whites during the day and is backlit with natural LED lighting at night. A stunning addition that can be seen from outside after sunset.

You’ll see other updates such as the beautiful solid cherry Chef’s Table with upholstered chairs on the Veranda for larger parties. Three faceted crystal globe chandeliers light the eight-foot long table and keeps with Greg Carelli’s penchant for comfortable drama. The counter height table is a nice transition between the bar and the rest of the dining room. The copper-clad fireplace-in-the-round has also been updated with a sandstone mantle and glass Jellybean tiles in subtle earth tones to coordinate with the over all vision of the remodel.

Jim Bray, AIA of Boulder, the architect for this project, helped Greg realize his ongoing artistic and architectural vision for his restaurant. The inspiration for this current remodel, as well as past updates, is Greg’s interest in Old World textures and Contemporary design. The common threads throughout all of the spaces in the restaurant are plush booth seating, dramatic mood lighting, circular forms, and natural materials such as steel, copper, wood, slate and glass.

Carelli’s of Boulder has received numerous design awards including The American Institute of Architecture, Denver Chapter, Award of Honor; American Institute Of Architects, Colorado, Honorable Mention; Daily Camera Best of Boulder, Best Italian Restaurant, 2002-2012; and Best Romantic Italian Restaurant, 2003-2012. Jeff Sheppard, AIA of Sheppard + Roth Architects, has worked on past remodels including the addition of the Bottega Di Vino event room in 2004 and the Osteria Bar in 2008.

The remarkable atmosphere, great food and exceptional service have kept people coming back for 24 years. While other restaurants come and go, Carelli’s is an oasis where heart and personality swirl together creating memorable dining experiences in all forms. On an average evening it is not uncommon to see everything from large family get-togethers, business cocktail mixers, birthday parties and intimate dinners for two. On Friday nights, low-key jazz tunes played by George Nelson set the mood. A restaurateur with keen instincts, Greg has done a fantastic job of creating spaces in the restaurant to accommodate this lively mix. Whether you’re enjoying a few drinks and appetizers on the patio, traditional á la minute favorites from the regular menu, or the locavore-centric nightly special created by Chef Samir Aniba, you’re in for an experience created especially for you.
