Boulder/Lafayette, CO - This February 2020, Boulder Opera announces the revival and Colorado Premiere of the fairy
tale Puss in Boots/Il Gato con Botas . Xavier Montsalvatge’s take on the classic story of an ingenious and quick-witted
feline with magical talents is sure to entertain the whole family.

Can Puss win the princess’ hand for his master? Will he outwit the evil ogre? Don’t miss the talented Boulder Opera singers and orchestra that will turn this fairytale into an afternoon of magical and adventurous opera. Just one hour and followed by a Q&A with the cast. For ages 3 and up.

Returning this season as artistic director is Michael Travis Risner, a Boulder-based singer and director. “It is with great
pleasure that we at Boulder Opera present Puss in Boots, or, in the original Spanish, Il Gato con Botas . Premiered in
Spain in 1946, we are so happy to stage this wonderful work - a classic telling of the original Puss in Boots legend. Our
audience will encounter not only the titular cat, but also the scary ogre whom he deceives, the beautiful princess, and
the humble miller. For those familiar only with Puss from the popular Dreamworks movies, this will be a fun and unique
way to learn the original story--an origin story, if you will--of one of their favorite characters.”

Executive producer, Nadia Artman adds, “The Puss in boots production will be spectacularly beautiful and fit for all ages.
All the costumes are original and picturesque--the princess alone will have different costumes for all of her appearances
in the opera. There will be some surprises in store for the audience, but we would like to keep those a secret for now.”

The Season Finale concert, Classical Evolution!, with harpsichordist Jory Vinikour

Boulder, Denver, Longmont, Colorado—Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra (PMC) will be ending their concert season with Classical Evolution!, performed in three locations: Friday, February 22, 7:30 pm at First Baptist Church of Denver (1373 Grant St, Denver, CO), Saturday, February 23, 7:30 pm at Mountain View United Methodist Church (355 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO), and Sunday, February 24, 2:00 pm at the Stewart Auditorium – Longmont Museum (400 Quail Road, Longmont, CO).

Classical Evolution! explores the evolution of classical music in this century, and the inspiration from previous eras and multiple cultures, with the use of an instrument choice from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the harpsichord. World-renowned harpsichordist, Jory Vinikour, joins Pro Music Colorado Chamber Orchestra on this musical journey.

The concert opens with a World Premiere of composer Max Wolpert’s “Baroque in Mirror.”

“Max Wolpert’s new composition is a wonderful homage to the Baroque Era in general and the folk fiddlers of the time,” says Cynthia Katsarelis, Music Director and Conductor of Pro Music Colorado Chamber Orchestra. “The work starts with a well-crafted, Baroque-sounding fugue that bursts out into an exhilarating fiddle tune! The outer movements honor Scottish and Welsh fiddlers while the middle movement comes closer to home. It is based on the Jewish fiddle music of 18th century by Abraham Caceres.”

Wolpert says ‘It was written in memory and mourning for the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre, October 27, 2018.’ A portion of the music is labelled “Kaddish” and quotes from that prayer. Music of our time, knitting together music of the past that speaks to the present.”

Also programmed is J.S. Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in D minor.

“This harpsichord concerto is one of his most popular works. It is also a fantastic example of Bach the Recycler,” says Katsarelis. “Its earliest incarnation was probably a violin concerto. By the 1720’s, all three movements appear in two of his cantatas. Finally, it appears as a keyboard concerto around 1734, probably for a performance with C. P. E. Bach as soloist. While the recycling speaks to the resilience of the music, the original inspiration came from J. S. Bach’s study of Vivaldi’s concertos. The concerto became quite popular in the 19th century. It was performed in Berlin by Felix Mendelssohn’s great aunt, Sara Levy, and later Felix’s sister, Fanny. Johannes Brahms even composed a cadenza for the last movement. It has everything we love about Baroque concertos: propulsive energy, delightful twists and turns, and lovely affects.”

The program closes with Haydn’s Symphony No. 22, the Philosopher.

“We love presenting those early Haydn symphonies; they are filled with delights and interesting twists and turns. Symphony No. 22, in particular, is considered a landmark of symphonic development. Haydn’s thematic invention, harmonic spinning out, and intriguing orchestration inspire and challenge the creative imaginations of later symphonic composers,” says Katsarelis.

The journey through the evolution of music, with use of the harpsichord, requires a musician with depth, which is why Jory Vinikour was approached for this program.

“Jory is an extraordinary musician, the range of his work includes soloing with the Cleveland Orchestra and working with major singers and conductors in Baroque and Classical Opera in Europe and the US,” says Katsarelis. “He was my collaborative pianist when we were undergraduates at Peabody Conservatory; this reunion will be especially joyful.”

PRO MUSICA COLORADO CHAMBER ORCHESTRA WITH BOULDER CHAMBER CHORALE

Pro Musica Colorado and Boulder Chamber Chorale present Handel’s Messiah!

Boulder, Colorado—Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra (PMC) is joined by the Boulder Chamber Chorale for Handel's Messiah!

On Saturday, December 1st, 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 2nd, 3:00 pm, both performances at Mountain View United Methodist Church (355 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO), the evolution of the spirit of classical music, and how it can be used for positive solutions for world challenges, takes flight. Handel’s Messiah, which includes the famous Hallelujah Chorus, is a Christmas tradition not to be missed! PMC partners with the Boulder Chamber Chorale and their artistic director, Dr. Vicki Burrichter, for these special performances.

“Messiah is a masterpiece that has inspired every composer who has written oratorios, including Haydn’s Creation, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, and Mendelssohn’s oratorios,” says Cynthia Katsarelis, Music Director and Conductor of PMC. “I’m thrilled to be working again with Vicki Burrichter; we share an impassioned vision of this music, one that is informed by the early music movement but rendered with the expressive palette and power of modern instruments.”

Dr. Burrichter is pleased to work with Maestra Katsarelis again, having prepared the chorus for PMC for Haydn's Creation in the past. "Cynthia and I have a similar musical sensibility and commitment and our knowledge areas compliment each other well. This is the first time the Boulder Chamber Chorale has collaborated with PMC, and we are very excited for this new venture!"

In addition to the musical collaboration, another feature will be added to the concert. Handel presented this work annually as a fundraiser for an orphanage. In this charitable tradition, Pro Musica Colorado and Boulder Chamber Chorale are including a food drive that will benefit Community Food Share. Non-perishable, packaged items (no glass containers) will be collected. Especially needed are: Nut Butters - Soups & Stews - Cereal & Oatmeal - Canned Tuna & Chicken - Baby Food & Formula (Not Expired) - Beans (Canned or Dry) - Canned Fruits - Canned Vegetables - Pasta & Sauce – Rice.

"I love the fact that Handel presented his Messiah annually as a benefit for orphans," says Katsarelis. "As someone who teaches music in Haiti, I’ve witnessed the power of music to lift spirits, heal trauma, and make community. With our wonderful orchestra, chorus, and soloists, we are excited to share the Messiah with our community in Boulder and beyond.”

What is myth? Why bother? Why consider the mythic quality of everyday life? These questions and more will be presented and discussed on Saturday, January 30th from 9 am to 5 pm at eTown Hall (1535 Spruce St, Boulder, Colorado).

The Workshop will cover many of Campbell’s ideas regarding myth: including his overview of myth and religion, the hero’s journey and the personal inward quest for meaning, the feminine divine, eternity, and, of course, bliss.

Back to my review. Please suspend your judgement. In all honesty, I am helping out this show at the 2014 Fringe Festival. I will say that I am an avid arts fan just like anyone else, and I have been Fringing since 2006. I have to say that this was one of the best Fringe shows I have experienced. Maybe it is because, this time, it was personal.

My family went through a similar tragedy. I got the call, I remember it being at around two in the afternoon, that my sister was in a car accident. I was hoping beyond hope that they were not riding their motorcycles that day. I barely got out the words to ask if she was okay, and the officer knew I was having trouble. He said she is going to be okay. My sister was in intensive care. I asked about her significant other, the officer quietly said, he didn't make it.

During the show, there was a scene that was extremely raw and powerful. It was in that moment I was hit with all the emotion I know my sister had gone through. It was anger at experiencing a loss when no loved one was around to help support the intense heavy load, and I lost it. I knew in that moment what my sister had gone through. I never truly got it, what it was like before I could get to the hospital, until Meghan acted out her personal experience. I am thankful I brought some tissues.

Another moment that had me breathe in, the grasping at the reason why this happened. In a simple instant, "Oh."

The ending got me as well. This show was well acted, professionally directed, fast flowing, and the music is demonstratively healing, as the part of the music truly was in Meghan's life.

So please, suspend judgement. Of course I want this show to succeed. I will say as the role of another arts attendee, this show is a must see. At least give yourself the opportunity to witness a gifted talent, Meghan Cary, while you have this chance.

On March 27th, 7:30 pm at the Mountain View United Methodist Church (355 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO), Pro Musica Colorado will be presenting "Bach and Beyond," taking listeners from the beauty of Bach to the musical hybridity of Golijov. Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the Grammy-award winning Takács String Quartet, joins PMC in Bach’s Concerto in E Major for Violin and Orchestra.

Edward Dusinberre was born in 1968 in Leamington Spa, England, and enjoyed playing and performing from a young age. At the Royal College of Music in London, Edward studied with Felix Andrievsky and members of the Chilingirian Quartet. In 1990 he won the British Violin Recital Prize and gave his debut recital in London at the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre. After graduating from the Royal College of Music, Edward continued his studies at the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay and Piotr Milewski. Edward's completion of his studies at Juilliard happily coincided with the opportunity to audition with the Takács Quartet which he joined in September 1993.

Also on the program is Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, the Trauer, a String Sinfonia by Mendelssohn, and Last Round, an evocative and poignant work by the two Grammy Award recipient, Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov.

“We were very thrilled to perform Golijov’s cantata, Oceana, with Ars Nova Singers two years ago, now we’re presenting a work of his that is perhaps more traditional,” says PMC Music Director, Cynthia Katsarelis.

This concert is the first of Pro Musica Colorado's brand new concert format called Far and Near. Each Far and Near concert will benefit other non-profit organizations close to home and far away. For the concert, PMC has teamed up with the Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) and the Orchestras Feeding America campaign of the League of American Orchestras. PMC is encouraging their patrons to bring an item from the list on their website (www.promusicacolorado.org) to help support families in need in Boulder County. This is the near component.

For the far, they have partnered with Colorado Haiti Project, and will be asking for donations at the concert to give renewal, relief and hope to Haiti. In Haiti, Katsarelis, saw the power of music to bring people together while teaching at the Holy Trinity School of Music. 20% of all donations to Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra will go directly to the Colorado Haiti Project.

Tickets for this concert are $20 for adults, $15 for Seniors and $10 for Students, available online at www.promusicacolorado.org or by calling 303-776-5355.
Also on the program are Mozart's Symphony No. 27, Jennifer Higdon's Celebration Fanfare, and Musica Celestis by Aaron Kernis.

Clarinet Concerto, K. 622

This is one of Mozart's last completed works and is one of his most sublime. It was written for his friend, Anton Stadler, who was a virtuoso of the clarinet and basset horn. Stadler was especially known for his beautiful playing in the lower register of the clarinet, and Mozart exploits that strength in his concerto.

Symphony No. 27, K. 199

Mozart had written many symphonies before this one was completed at the age of 17. This symphony is a synthesis of everything he had learned on his many travels to musical centers, such as Mannheim, Vienna, and Italy.

Musica Celestis

The composer writes that this work was inspired by the medieval conception of of the angels singing in heaven, praising God without end. He notes that he doesn't particularly believe in angels, but that the image was powerful for him. He had been inspired by listening to medieval music, especially that of Hildegard of Bingen. Writers have likened this work to Barber's Adagio for Strings.

Celebration Fanfare

Jennifer Higdon is on the composition faculty at the Curtis Institution of Music. She is one of America's most frequently performed composers who has been commissioned by many major orchestras. Celebration Fanfare is a jazzy work for string orchestra.

PERISH, THE THOUGHT, A CLASSICAL CONCERT PREMIERE BY DAVID HARRIS
A Memorial Day weekend concert interpreting the meaning of death for life.

Lafayette, Colo.— “And as to you Death, it is idle to try to alarm me,” Walt Whitman exclaimed and inspired others to contemplate what death really means in regard to life. David Harris, Composer, has been pondering this question as of late diving deep into the worlds of poetry, prose, and art to formulate his own thoughts and feelings on this subject. The result is the world premiere of his latest musical compositions in a Memorial Day weekend concert entitled Perish, The Thought. The concert will premiere the cantata The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, the choral cycle The Frail Stag and his first String Quartet.

On Friday, May 22nd at First Congregational Church of Boulder (1128 Pine Street, Boulder, CO), 7:30 pm and Saturday, May 23rd at Christ Church Episcopal Denver (2950 South University Avenue, Denver, CO). 7:30 pm, David Harris focuses on mortality and ways that people have attempted to reconcile life’s brevity. “I have collected ideas posited by poets, artists and religious treatises. The music acts as a vehicle for the concepts found in these documents, and through it, I intermingle my own reflections. Though a heavy topic, the outcome is one of hope, and the music contains energy and vibrancy,” says Harris.

Both The Frail Stag and The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew found their inspiration in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Upper West Side annex, The Cloisters. The cantata began in the chant “Apostolo Beato” found in The Florence Laurdario (book of chants) that The Cloisters has on display.

The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew explores the ubiquitous complexities surrounding death by juxtaposing texts from modern poets and ancient religious documents. Particularly, the texts wrestle with the nobility that humans often assign to death and the manner of one's dying. They reflect on what meaning these matters can ascribe to life, and they ponder the definition of life, whether one can be living and yet dead (a popular secular and religious sentiment). The music engages the audience through lyrical melody with rhythmic and harmonic layering. It is immediately accessible, but challenges the listener beyond the immediate, opening aural opportunities for novice and expert alike.

The Frail Stag was inspired by a 16th-century French tapestry bearing the allegory of a stag hunt, one that depicts human mortality. In the tapestry, Old Age hunts the stag (mankind) with the help of her hounds whose names are grief, anxiety, fear, cold, heat and toil.

The Frail Stag for chorus is in three movements. The first bears the tapestry's text that describes the activity in the foreground image that represents the end of life. The second movement is from the poem “Pense Morir” by Pablo Neruda and reflects adulthood’s principle challenge, the quest for meaning and love. “And a little child will lead them” from the Hebrew prophet Isaiah finishes the set. Harris explains,“Instead of a focus on loathing, the choral cycle, in contrast to the tapestry, suggests that life springs from death, and that perspective offers relief from the pain of aging.”

String Quartet, David Harris' first string quartet, takes its departure from the text printed on “The Hunt of the Frail Stag” tapestry, with each of the movements named for one of the dogs who attack the stag. By extension, the music stirs thoughts of mortality and time. Moments of untroubled beauty mingle with fast-paced textural conflict.

Perish, The Thought features the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers, a string quartet of the Boulder Philharmonic (Gyongver Petheo, Annamaria Karacson, Matthew Dane and Marcelo Sanches), in addition to Elizabeth Caswell Dyer, soprano, Marta Burton, mezzo, Ryan Connell on organ and David Harris conducting.

Marta Burton, mezzo-soprano for Perish, The Thought, describes why she is delighted to be performing another David Harris composition, “David Harris’ settings are ravishing in their emotional impact--the complexities of harmony and rhythm serve the poetry, ultimately revealing the depth of the language through his sensitive and fearless renderings. He writes beautifully for the voice, allowing the singers to bring their own color and vitality to the work. It is an absolute joy to sing and hear his music.”

For tickets to see Perish, The Thought, $10 GA, purchase with a credit card at http://www.davidharrismusic.net or purchase with check or cash at the door.

For more information about David Harris, Composer/Conductor and Perish, The Thought, please view his website at http://www.davidharrismusic.net.

Perish, The Thought - Event Details

High Octane, a multimedia modern dance theater performance fueled by the shock of life's changes...

Boulder, Colo.— Sometimes life gives you a shock! Sometimes change is not an option. People have referred to this time in our lives as a nervous breakdown or as an identity crisis. Danelle Helander refers to these transitions as High Octane. From Friday, April 3rd thru Sunday, April 5th (Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m.), the Helander Dance Theater presents a multimedia performance, High Octane, at the Dairy Center for the Arts (2590 Walnut Street, Boulder, CO), where modern dance theater demonstrates these uncomfortable, unwarrented, and sometimes unwelcomed life changes.High Octane takes off from last season's investigations of the dramatic changes occurring in the world around us and the world within us. Drawing from ten interviews with Boulder residents, performers recreate how we as a community deal with these bumps in the road and how raw the accompanying emotions are that we feel.

Founder and artistic director, Danelle Helander, creates modern dance theater that is powerful and experimental. Helander's choreography is edgy, whimsical, athletic, abstract yet descriptive with a touch of humor. There are flowing moments with controlled technique; the dance represents the confusion and fascination that we all have in life. In some of High Octane's movements, the animal nature of our humanity presents itself. The lizards from last year's Petrol are back! Combined with the emotional charge of the dance are elements of monologues, theatrical scenes, and visual film backgrounds. Helander is joined by Boulder musician Michael Zekonis who composed an electronic, atmospheric musical backdrop for the performance.

“It just goes to show you, you never know how you'll react to life's changes. And change doesn’t happen over night. You have the loss of something familiar, the hazy period of limbo, and then, finally, you move on to something new,” Helander contemplates during her monologue moment, “ When you're in transition, you find yourself coming back in new ways to old activities, but it doesn't always work. Some things change your life forever, like being left at a gas station, having a baby, wiping the slate clean, finding the white page of your life. Getting married. Getting divorced.”

Petrol took us through the situations that change our lives; High Octane, delves into the psychological breakdowns that occur. Questions of “who am I?” and “why change now?” are the backbone of this production, questions that most of us have had along the road of life. After the journey comes a bit of a release. “My options are no longer paralyzed,” explained Helander, “With High Octane, I wish to share the greater understanding that through the breakdowns are breakthroughs of becoming open to the universe. This is when true healing can begin.”

About The Helander Dance Theater

Colorado-based Helander Dance Theater was founded by Danelle Helander, Artistic Director & Choreographer in 1980. With a reputation for multi-faceted artistry and striking choreography, HDT's mission is to make a vital contribution to our global community using dance as a vehicle for creating greater understanding, sharing & healing. Danelle was given the role of Ambassador during HDT’s Sister Cities tour within Tajikistan, Nicaragua, Japan and Tibet collaboration with the University of Colorado and the Mali Assistance Project allowed HDT to use performance as a vehicle for providing needed supplies to Mali villages. The company has also partnered with Global Response to resolve an oil drilling issue in Costa Rica. In performance, HDT is eclectic, dramatic, sometimes whimsical & always thought provoking.Colorado Shakespeare Festival's Holiday Play - A Child's Christmas in Walestag:www.mytowncolorado.com,2008-12-03:2021996:BlogPost:143862008-12-03T23:47:30.000ZShoshana Fanizzahttps://www.mytowncolorado.com/profile/ShoshanaFanizza
