Family Learning Center Raises $165,000 at Annual Auction
Annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Awards Dinner and Auction Exceeds Fundraising Goal and Successfully Kicks Off End-of-Year Fundraising Campaign
Boulder, Colo., October 12, 2010 - The Family Learning Center, a Boulder non-profit dedicated to encouraging successful lifelong learning and economic self-sufficiency for families of diverse cultures and limited incomes, announced today that it raised more than $165,000 at its 16th annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Awards Dinner and Auction held on Friday, September 24 at the Stadium Club in Boulder.
"We are very pleased and grateful to our sponsors and the Boulder community for helping us surpass our fundraising goal for this event," said Brenda Lyle, founder and executive director of The Family Learning Center. "It is especially significant given the state of the economy and the national conversation about the achievement gap in our schools. The Family Learning Center is an important part of the solution to ensure that minority and low-income students master the skills necessary to compete in school and in life.”
Also at the event, the family of the late Penfield Tate – which includes his widow Ellen, and children Gail, Penfield III, Paula and Rosalynn Tate – was awarded the 2010 Penfield Tate Humanitarian Award for their outstanding humanitarian work.
The annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Award was created by The Family Learning Center to honor the memory and legacy of the late Penfield Tate, a former mayor of Boulder and civil rights lawyer.
In the coming months, The Family Learning Center will launch several holiday drives for low-income families in Boulder, including a toy drive, a winter coat drive for kids, an adopt-a-family program and other efforts to raise funds to provide quality early childhood and college prep programs for low-income children throughout Boulder and Broomfield Counties. All Family Learning Center fundraising efforts directly support its early childhood programs, school age programs, adult education, community support and technology and literacy programs for more than 1,200 low-income children and their families in Boulder.
