Longmont Chorale in its 74th Season, Gears Up for Next Year’s 75th Diamond Jubilee

The Longmont Chorale launches its 74th season with an October 16 concert at Niwot High School. The first concert, A Title Wave of Aqueous Impressions, brings together the Longmont Chorale and the forty member, auditioned Laudamus Chamber Choir from Fort Collins. The concert builds on a water theme featuring music that evokes images of oceans, waves, rain, and lakes, with compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Roger Miller, and several spirituals.

The choir’s repertoire encompasses both classical and popular selections. The popular annual holiday concert will be at Niwot High School on December 11; this year the Chorale presents My Spirit Rejoices, with selections from John Rutter’s Magnificat and inspiring arrangements of Ave Maria by Stravinsky, Villa Lobos, and Biebel. A spring concert on March 12, 2011 -- Americanum Centurum: a Choral Collection -- will be a compilation of outstanding American choral composers of the last one hundred years including Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, Amy Beach, Leonard Bernstein, and Samuel Barber. The final concert of the season will feature Broadway winners of the last forty years, including songs of Andrew Lloyd Weber from Phantom and Les Miserables, and songs from Big River, a new musical based on the adventures of Huckleberry Finn with music by Roger Miller.

The Longmont Chorale began in 1936 as a group of citizens who wished to perform Handel’s Messiah. From its small beginnings, the choir has grown to between 80 and 110 choir members, prominently including local high school students as well as more seasoned singers. Members of the chorale rehearse weekly throughout the season. New members are always welcomed.

Tickets are available by mail: Longmont Chorale, P.O. Box 902, Longmont 80502. Both single concert tickets and season tickets may be purchased. Adult tickets are $16 each, with a discount for seniors and students. Adult season tickets are $56 with discounts for seniors and students. See www.longmontchorale.com for more pricing and concert detail and for membership and rehearsal information.

Ticket sales fund a permanent artistic director and an accompanist. Scott Hamlin, the Artistic Director, also serves several area churches as music director and is an accompanist for the St. Vrain Valley School District. He has been involved in choir music since his teens and received a Masters degree in conducting from the University of Northern Colorado. Karen Main has been the Accompanist for the chorale for many years and also frequently performs during concerts. She has her bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder. The group is currently seeking an associate director. Besides its paid staff, the Chorale has a core group of about 15 members who volunteer their time toward publicity, music organization, ticket sales and graphics, and there are other opportunities for volunteering throughout the year.
