Boulder, CO – The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, located at 4869 N. Broadway in Boulder, will open its kitchen to Chef Jason Rogers on Saturday, August 29, 2009, to prepare a gourmet dinner for homeless individuals currently residing at the Shelter. Rogers is head chef for Oskar Blues, including the Homemade Liquids & Solids pub in Longmont.

Rogers worked in highly acclaimed restaurants on the East Coast and in Aspen, Boulder, and Denver prior to joining Oskar Blues in August. He will be assisted in the preparation of the Shelter meal by a team of his staff and Shelter volunteers. Ingredients for the meal will come from the Shelter pantry, including items provided by Community Food Share and produce donated by the Boulder Farmers Market.

“This will be a fun evening for the Shelter residents,” said Greg Harms, Executive Director of the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. “Who doesn’t enjoy an especially fine meal on occasion?”

The Shelter expects to house approximately 50 residents on Saturday. These residents are part of the Transition Program, a year round initiative that provides stable housing with consistent case management to help move clients toward self sufficiency. Clients in the program must remain substance-free and are required to save a portion of their income toward future housing needs.

The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless was founded in 1982 by a group of concerned citizens, in response to the death of a local homeless veteran who died of exposure in downtown Boulder. Since then, the Shelter has continued to expand its programs and services in response to the emergent needs of the homeless population in our community. In 2003, the Shelter opened its current facility. It is the only over-night Shelter for single adults between Fort Collins and Denver, serving all of Boulder and Broomfield counties.
