SUMMARY:Spiritual Forum: Introduction to Shamanism
DESCRIPTION:Abstract. This presentation provides an overview of Shaman
 ism and includes an experiential exercise in drumming and receiving in
 formation. Shamanism is an ancient practice for healing and understand
 ing the world. Classical shamanism recognizes two realities: ordinary 
 reality, which is our normal waking consciousness of consensual realit
 y, and non-ordinary reality. Spirits are in non-ordinary reality in th
 e upper, middle, and lower worlds. The shaman communicates with wise, 
 compassionate spirits in these worlds to receive information and provi
 de the power for healing. Shamans work in an altered state of consciou
 sness brought on by steady drumming. The session includes an experient
 ial exercise involving drumming and a journey to a favorite place in n
 ature to find out which of our five normal and other lesser-known sens
 es serve as our best channels for receiving information. For more info

 ter Biography. Ellen Winner is a retired patent attorney living in Bou
 lder, CO who has devoted herself to Shamanistic practices and educatio
 n. She began studying Shamanism in 1984 with The Foundation for Shaman
 ic Studies, which has revived Shamanism in the Western World. She has 
 also studied with indigenous Himalayan shamans in Nepal. She is a Facu
 lty Member of The Foundation teaching workshops in shamanism in Kansas
 , Nebraska, and Wyoming. She has authored two books on Shamanism: Thou
