The Care Center offers compassionate care for complex medical issues on a short-term basis. Family members are able to visit their loved one 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The May 30 event served to welcome community members and was attended by new LUH CEO, Dr. Christina Johnson, TRU Board Co-Chairs Marty Coffin Evans and Jim Williams, and many long-time TRU supporters. Chaplains from LUH and TRU said blessings after TRU CEO Michael McHale gave opening remarks and TRU COO Pat Mehnert shared stories of special Care Center moments from the past few decades.

He has a compelling presentation and, if time permits, can show how to change your ostomy pouch while roped to the side of a mountain!
The Boulder County Department of Housing and Human Services (BCDHHS) will host “Portraits of Ability: Stories of Independence and Inspiration” November 1, 2017, through February 28, 2018, at the St. Vrain Community Hub, 515 Coffman St, Longmont, CO 80501. The free exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

“Portraits of Ability” is a photojournalism exhibit presented by Via Mobility Services in partnership with VSA Colorado.

The mission of Via, a private nonprofit organization established in 1979, is to promote independence and self-sufficiency for people with limited mobility by providing caring, customer-focused transportation options. “Portraits of Ability” features 15 “portrait-stories” of people Via serves, including unique images and narratives which share a common theme – that of striving to not be defined by disability or age. The spirit and rich sense of who each person is – beyond their mobility challenges – is captured in photo-portraits taken by New York portrait artist Sophie Klafter. The exhibit was curated by the VSA Colorado/Access Gallery, the state organization on disabilities and the arts.

“The community Via serves overflows with people taking amazing journeys through life. Via is thrilled to be able to share these stories with a wider audience,” said Communications Manager, Lyndsy Morse. “The St. Vrain Community Hub’s commitment to access is a perfect complement to both our mission and the spirit of the ‘Portraits of Ability’ exhibit.”

The St. Vrain Community Hub is designed to remove obstacles to a wide range of supports, including access to transportation. The Hub is a “one-stop” health, housing, and human services hub for providers who share many of the same clients. Beyond simply co-locating related services, the Hub provides a holistic approach to meeting clients where they are – and helps guide them along a more personalized and positive path toward stability and self-sufficiency.

“We’re excited to partner with Via Mobility Services to bring these important visual stories of personal strength to the St. Vrain Community Hub,” said Boulder County Housing and Human Services Director Frank Alexander. “Via’s focus on helping promote independence and self-sufficiency is a great fit for the Hub, which has a similar mission for those we serve.”

Growing up along Highway 66 with Long’s Peak and Mount Meeker framed in her windows, Annette Meserve’s stories were expressed in her paintings and drawings. These days, she makes her home farther south, living in the shadow of the Spanish Peaks where she’s shifted to the written and spoken word to relay her experiences and imaginings.

Last fall Meserve began a practice of creating one spontaneous poem every morning. The newly published Life at the Far End, is a collection of these word sketches portraying an existence filled with poignancy, contemplation, beauty, and humor.

Nature moves from winter to spring and, with children away at college and her chef-husband recently retired, the author examines what it is to reinvent herself combining the richness of family, history, and new opportunities. This erstwhile homeschool mom sets off on an adventure into the digital landscape of animation and video production while using daily poetry as a way to reconcile a tactile, hands-on lifestyle with one of pixels and computer screens.

Indian Peaks Daughters of the American Revolution

On Sunday, the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, chapters across the nation will unite in completing service projects of specific interest to their local communities. This historic event demonstrates the impact of DAR community service on local communities and throughout America.

The local Indian Peaks chapter of NSDAR is undertaking two projects involving the Lafayette Cemetery. The Headstone Inscription Project will record the information from the nearly 4,000 headstones and make it available nationwide. In addition, the Find-a-Grave Completion Project will provide photographs of the headstones along with the entrance sign to the cemetery. The resulting work from the Headstone Inscription Project will be published in a hard-copy book and kept at the DAR Library as well as become a fully indexed, digitized work, available through the DAR Seimes Technology Center and online to the public. Making this information available to public sources is a great benefit to citizens across the nation who are researching genealogy

This is an ambitious and genealogically meaningful community service project. Descendants from all over the country, and even the world, will be able to locate their ancestor's headstones containing, in most cases, the birth and death year of the individual and in some instances, marriage date information and military service.

For more information about this project or to participate, contact IndianPeaksRegent@gmail.com.

Local book lovers will enjoy browsing for books for the 62nd year when the American Association of University Women's (AAUW) Longmont Branch opens their annual Bargain Book Fair at 9 a.m. Friday in the Fellowship Hall at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. This community event has been held in various locations throughout Longmont during the past 61 years and has raised thousands of dollars in scholarships for women and girls and various community projects.

The first AAUW book fair was held Saturday, Nov. 14, 1953, at the St. Vrain Memorial Building. The fair was the first of its kind to be held in Longmont; members had gone to Denver and selected 700 children's books of all types and prices to offer the community, an usually large offering of books at the time. Members provided child care and free coffee, tea and cookies to those attending the event. Proceeds were used to finance the Annual Senior Girl Cash Award, which was given each year to an outstanding senior girl in Longmont High School who intended to attend college.

By 1962, the format of the sale had changed and only used books were sold at the annual event. Now, members collect used books throughout the year but most donations are received when collection barrels are placed throughout the community several months before the fair. Generous community members donate thousands of books each year.

Most of the proceeds from last year's sale went into AAUW's Scholarship Fund and their Community Actions Grants Fund, both administered by the Longmont Community Foundation. Three local grants were given to the Open Door ESL Program, Intercambio, and Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley's TERA Program (Teens Ending Relationship Abuse).

The AAUW will be taking donations of books through Oct. 10 at all King Soopers in Longmont, Firestone and Gunbarrel; the Carbon Valley Recreation Center, 701 Fifth St., Frederick; and the following locations in Longmont, Lucky's Market, 700 Ken Pratt Blvd, #201; Sprouts, 1101 S Hover St.; Vitaman Cottage, 1745 Main St., and the Longmont YMCA, 950 Lashley St.

The hours of this year's fair will be from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, and Oct. 17, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18, at St. Stephen Episcopal Church, 1303 S. Bross Lane, Longmont.

A popular new feature of the fair is the Sunday box sale. You can fill an empty book box with your choice of books from 2 p.m. until closing and pay just $10. During this time the smaller paperbacks will be free for those making another purchase.

For more information about the sale, please visit AAUW's website at Longmont-co.aauw.net or visit the Longmont AAUW Bargain Book Fair on Facebook. The purpose of AAUW is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
