American Avocet flying across the lake. Avocets are one of my very favorite birds. These small, elegant, beautiful shorebirds migrate to Colorado in the spring to hang out and mate. The water level in this lake was very low at the edges, which is perfect for Avocets in spring time, because they like to mate in the shallow water, and also it helps them find food.

This pic was taken in Louisville. Avocets like shallow water, so look for ponds or small lakes with shallow water at the edges. For flight shots of avocets, my shutter speed would have been around 1/2000/sec or 1/2500/sec if I had enough light,
