what lens did you use and what was your settings? I am a budding photographer and I shot with a Nikon DSLR D5300 and my biggest lens I have is a 55-300. And I am struggling with my settings when it comes to birds. I would love any pointers or tips.

Emily,
Always use a tripod if you have one, shoot wide open for a shorter focal length... F4 will work.  You want the bird to be the subject and not the tree so try to focus just in front of the subject so the background blurs slightly... use the fastest shutter speed the light will allow and try to stay in the ISO range of 400 or less.  Those are my tips.
