Boulder Rotarians raise Polio Plus funds to honor Ty Kaus,
helping to meet $200 million challenge from Gates Foundation

BOULDER – Members of the Boulder Rotary Club are honoring one of their own in raising money to fight polio in response to a challenge from Bill Gates.

Gates has challenged Rotarians all over the world to help wipe out polio as he announced a second grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to Rotary International’s Polio Plus project.

The first grant for polio eradication from the Gates Foundation came in November 2007, when Rotary agreed to match a $100 million grant dollar-for-dollar by 2010. This year the Foundation is awarding a $255 million challenge grant to Rotary, which Rotary will match with another $100 million by 2012.

Rotary clubs worldwide already are raising matching funds for the first grant. So far clubs have raised $62 million in contributions and $11 million in commitments toward that goal.

The Boulder Rotary Club has chosen to honor the late Ty Kaus of Louisville, a longtime member of the club who had polio as a child and as an adult became a champion wheelchair athlete.

“So far we have raised close to $26,600 towards Polio Plus,” said Boulder Rotary President Peter Ewing.

Ewing is also urging local churches to contribute a month’s worth of coins from their collection plates to the cause. Three churches in Boulder have already donated $4,500, he said.

“I would propose that the faith communities of Boulder designate one month as the Global Polio Eradication Month, or designate a special offering for this project,” Ewing said. Those interested in learning more can contact him at pmjewing@earthlink.net.

Since 1985 Rotary has worked with the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control to hold National Immunization Days, staffed by millions of Rotarians and other volunteers all over the world. In the past 22 years, Rotarians have donated nearly $800 million to the project. Last year polio was reported in only 4 countries in the world – Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan – with only 1,313 reported cases.
