Parks and Recreation to offer free seed packets to mothers on Mother’s Day
The city of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department will offer free seed packets to all mothers who visit the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway Ave., South Boulder Recreation Center, 1360 Gillaspie Drive, and East Boulder Community Center, 5660 Sioux Drive, on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11 (while supplies last). The seed packets are donated by Lake Valley Seed. For more information, call Parks and Recreation at 303-413-7200.

Opening on the Downtown Management Commission
The Boulder City Council is currently accepting applications for the Downtown Management Commission (DMC). City Boards offer residents a unique opportunity to become involved in local government and in the community. The Downtown Management Commission has the combined responsibilities of the previous Central Area General Improvement District (CAGID) Board and the Downtown Mall Commission, as well as quality of life improvement in the CAGID. Applicants for the DMC seat must be a city elector, at least 18 years of age, female, reside within the Boulder city limits, and either own or represent property in the CAGID district. Applications can be picked up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Council Office, 1777 Broadway, or you can apply online at www.bouldercolorado.gov and click on “Boards and Commissions”. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9, no late applications or postmarks will be accepted. Appointments will be made May 20. Volunteers needed for Community Cleanup Day
Help clean up Boulder by volunteering for Community Cleanup Day from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers will help beautify Boulder by planting flowers, removing trash/recyclables and pulling weeds from parks, greenways and trails. After the work is complete, all volunteers are invited to a post event ice cream social at Scott Carpenter Park. Each participant will receive a one-day pass to the Boulder Reservoir and will be entered in a prize drawing for items such as gift certificates from Western Disposal, Eco-Cycle and more. Grassland bird nesting closures in effect
The city of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department has temporarily closed the following areas to protect grassland nesting birds beginning May 1 through July 31:
• Both sides of the Greenbelt Plateau from Community Ditch Trail to Highway 128. Dogs will be allowed on the Greenbelt Plateau only if they are on-leash (area is normally voice and sight control);
• Community Ditch Trail west of Highway 93 and north of Community Ditch Trail; and
• West of Highway 93 and north of Doudy Draw Trail.

OSMP relies heavily on the public to respect the closures and the cooperation of visitors to these areas is greatly appreciated. For more information, visit www.osmp.org or call 303-441-3440.

Parks and Recreation’s EXPAND program “Share your ideas” meeting set for May 7
The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department’s EXPAND Program will host a “Share your ideas” meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at the Iris Center, 3198 N. Broadway Ave. (next to the North Boulder Recreation Center). EXPAND provides a wide range of social, therapeutic and recreational activities for youth and adults with disabilities. Senior Services Summer Magazine now available
The city of Boulder Senior Services Summer 2008 Magazine is now available. Copies have been mailed to city of Boulder seniors and can also be picked up at the East Boulder Senior Center, 5660 Sioux Drive; the West Boulder Senior Center, 909 Arapahoe; or see the online magazine at www.boulderseniorservices.com.
Registration for summer programs begins on Wednesday, May 14, for Encore members. Mail-in, fax, online and drop off registration begins Thursday, May 15 and walk-in and phone registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20. E-Connect registration can be done online beginning Tuesday, May 19 at 8:30 a.m. at www.boulderseniorservices.com.
New offerings in the magazine include:
• The nationally known Silver Sneakers Program, free for 2,500 seniors in the area who have coverage under their insurance policies. Sign-up begins June 2 and classes begin June 6.
• There will be several day trips, including a new bus trip on Tuesday, July 22, called the Colorado Views trip presented by Denver History Tours and a ride on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak on Friday, Aug. 29.
• Senior Resources and the Alzheimer’s Association will sponsor a new set of classes beginning with “All About Alzheimer’s: An Introduction to the Disease” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at the East Boulder Senior Center, 5660 Sioux Drive.
• Savvy Caregiver classes continue from 10 a.m. to noon beginning Tuesday, July 15, and running for six weeks through Aug. 19. This course is free but a donation of $25 to the Alzheimer’s Association is appreciated.
• The popular series on dining out will continue to take seniors out of town to enjoy different cuisines. This quarter seniors can go to Gumbo’s Louisiana Café in Denver, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Westminster, and the White Fence Farm in Lakewood.

“Yoga with your Daughter” class offered May 11
The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department will offer a “Yoga with your Daughter” class from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, at the East Boulder Community Center, 5660 Sioux Drive. The class will focus on basic postures that promote healthy body care, balancing gentleness and strength. Class fees are $16 for Boulder residents and $19 for non-residents (fees include one adult and one child; additional children are half of the fee). Exuberant Animal workshop held May 18
The city of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with The National Institute for Play, will present a one-day Exuberant Animal workshop for adults from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway Ave. The workshop is led by Frank Forencich, the creator of Exuberant Animal, who has more than 25 years of teaching experience in martial art and functional movement. The workshop will focus on play-based fitness, functional movement and group class leadership, and is ideal for personal trainers, physical educators, coaches and athletes. Continuing education credits are available for professionals. The workshop cost is $100. Advanced registration is required and space is limited. Construction at Pleasant View Fields is complete

Construction of a concrete patio and accessible ramp at Pleasant View Fields, 3805 47th St., is complete. The new patio and ramp meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for wheelchair access from the parking lot to the playing fields. All asphalt and paving materials removed prior to construction were recycled and recycled materials were used in the concrete installation and parking lot pavement mixes. The project also included installation of nearly 5,000 square feet of heat- and drought-resistant grass, water-saving irrigation heads and a weather-sensing irrigation control system for optimal water conservation. Kids can learn to birdwatch
Join city of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department naturalist Dave Sutherland on a bird expedition designed for children from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10. Meet at the Doudy Draw Trailhead, 1.8 miles west of Highway 93 on Eldorado Springs Drive. Kids will learn to spot birds by ear, how to use a bird’s color and behavior to identify it, and how to use a field guide. For more information, visit www.osmp.org or call 303-441-3440.

See Saturn’s rings
City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department naturalist Dave Sutherland will share his telescope and help people examine Saturn’s rings from 9 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16 (bad weather date May 17), at the Boulder Valley Ranch, Sage Trailhead, one miles east of Highway 36 on Longhorn Road. Senior Services offers free seminar on reverse mortgages
Senior Resources staff from Boulder Senior Services will offer a free seminar for those who may be considering a reverse mortgage or those whose aging parents may be thinking about this to gain access to home equity. The seminar will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, at the East Boulder Senior Center, 5660 Sioux Drive, in the west wing of the East Boulder Community Center. Speakers are Christopher Hudak from the Boulder County Housing Authority and Bob Groening, certified mortgage lender. The seminar is free and reservations are not needed. Municipal Court closed until 1 p.m. on Friday
The Boulder Municipal Court, located in the Boulder County Justice Center at 1777 6th Street, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 9, for a staff meeting. The court closes the second Friday of each month for a staff meeting. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

P&DS Center temporary closure scheduled
The city of Boulder’s Planning and Development Services (P&DS) Center, 1739 Broadway, will be closed for a staff in-service day on Tuesday, May 13. Staff will use this day to focus on the review of building permits and land use applications, and to address other operational and training needs. The services center staff will not be available to answer phones. The P&DS Services Center will reopen at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14.
