Centerra, in Loveland, is the first community in Colorado to be certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Habitat Community. This tour of High Plains Environmental Center will highlight strategies that made this achievement possible including; creating open space in the midst of development, demonstration gardens that promote the use of native plants, and a nursery that makes native plants available to the public.
The environmental center has an extensive educational collaboration with Front Range Community College, Thompson School District, and The City of Loveland that provides students, and volunteers, with opportunities for first-hand experience in storm water management, habitat restoration, botany, wildlife monitoring, and horticulture. The center maintains on-going relationships Native American communities and hosts cultural events within a Plains Ethno-Botany garden.
The Chapungu Sculpture Park is a 26-acre nature preserve within Centerra that contains 80 stone sculptures by Shona artists of Zimbabwe. The heart of the park is a watershed with mature cottonwood trees, native shrubs and grasses, and abundant wildlife. Ornamental beds within the intensively managed park showcase native and xeric plants.
