Event Description

The Museum of Boulder and the Boulder Rotary Club are hosting a program called “The Pillars at Nine Mile Corner: Their History and Future.”

About this event:

Built in 1928 as part of the Gateway to a proposed Road of Remembrance, the two stone pillars on Arapahoe Road just west of its intersection with US 287 were erected as a memorial to troops from Boulder County that served in World War I. But the fascinating story of the pillars also was part of a larger effort bring good roads to the West, and a spirited competition between Boulder, Lafayette, and Longmont in the 1920s for tourist dollars.

Join us for a lively discussion of this history, and the events and characters behind this Boulder County landmark at what became known as Nine Mile Corner. Led by Bill Meyer of the Boulder Rotary Club, the program also will include a panel discussion of the serious impacts on the pillars of recent construction at the Nine Mile Corner intersection, and describe current efforts underway by a coalition of Boulder County groups to restore and preserve this part of the County’s history.
