19 Local Teachers Honored
 
                Longmont, Colo.--“It is a wonderful experience to be in school...,” Longmont Mayor Bryan Baum said. “Some of the most inspiring people in my life have been my teachers.”
 
                Baum spoke as the keynote speaker at The Sixth Annual Teacher Appreciation Night, which was sponsored by the Longmont Colorado Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), on Thurs., Mar. 10. The event was held at the Longmont Colorado LDS Stake Center, 1720 Red Cloud Road, in Longmont.
 
                Nineteen educators, coaches and administrators from throughout the St. Vrain Valley School District area were honored for making a difference by high school seniors from the church.
 
                “I appreciate the teachers in the room,” Baum said. “They know they’ve had an impact on lives. It is wonderful to honor these people.”

                One-by-one the students each gave a tribute and presented a certificate of appreciation to his or her nominee.

                Joshua Powner, 17, of Frederick, honored John Crosby of Frederick High School in Frederick, his longtime math teacher.
 
                “He’s been such a great influence in my life,” Powner said. “He’s a humble man and a great humbler…He is prepared and cares about our class.”
 
                Savannah Doherty, 17, of Longmont recognized Mike Andrews retired of Fall River Elementary in Longmont. Andrews was her second grade teacher.
 
                “He played with us,” Doherty said. “He made us feel welcome. He was always there for me.”
 
                Following Doherty’s comments, Andrews said a little choked up, “She helped me a lot by inviting me here tonight. I’m a principal now. It has been a rough three weeks. It seems every fifth grader I have has revolted and got in trouble. When I got this in the mail, I felt so good…I told everyone about it.”
 
                The evening concluded with many smiles, hugs, handshakes and tears.

*Erin Allen, Skyline High School; Mike Andrews, retired of Fall River Elementary; Mel Bacon, Aims Community College; Bob Banning, Silver Creek High School; Kate Brown, Boulder Preparatory High School; John Crosby, Fredrick High School; Gerry Galway, Frederick High School; Traci Gauthier, Skyline High School; *Jon Glasser, Skyline High School; Max Lehman, LDS Seminary; Cara Luchies-Schroeder, Silver Creek High School; Brian McGurick, Black Rock Elementary; Trip Merklein, formerly of Longmont High School; Jon Smedes, Skyline High School; Karen Smith, Hygiene Elementary; Holli Stetson, Longmont High School; Lisa Walker, Home School; Donna Weaver, Loma Linda Elementary; and *Katherine Zulauf, Frederick High School.
 
                *These teachers, coaches and administrators have been nominated multiple times by various students for this event.
