Boulder Rotarian’s Helping Hands in Nepal

BOULDER – Narayan Shrestha, a Boulder businessman and member of the Boulder Rotary Club, founded the Helping Hands Health Education Foundation to help the people of his native Nepal. Narayan spoke to the Rotary Club at its meeting Friday, Sept. 5, about his efforts to provide health care from the western world for Nepal.

In 1982 he planned a trip to his native town, Khandbari, and he had arranged for some interested Americans to vacation in Nepal during his trip. Several doctors and nurses were on the trek and encountered a child with a stick penetrating his chin and coming out of his mouth. The stick had been there for seven days, but his face was so infected and swollen it could not be removed. The doctors spent a night with the child, removed the stick using a pocketknife as a scalpel, stitched and treated the wound.

The experience gave Narayan an idea: He would organize trips to Nepal for volunteers, who would provide medical services there in exchange for the experience of trekking in the Himalayas. When he returned to the United States, Narayan organized the foundation to help cover the costs of medical services in rural Nepal, using medical and non-medical volunteers from the West. The first such trip occurred in 1988.

Currently Helping Hands has two permanent clinics in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Helping Hands also has permanent clinics in the rural town of Khandbari in eastern Nepal and the village of Phalewas in western Nepal.

More than 1,000 doctors, nurses, physicianl assistants, medical students and non-medical volunteers from the western world have provided health care and health education in Nepal through Helping Hands, benefiting more than 150,000 residents of rural Nepal. Recently Helping Hands completed building and outfitting a 100-bed hospital there.
