Traditional Bulgarian Band, Kabile, to Perform in Boulder and LongmontBoulder, CO (9/16/2008) One of Bulgaria's premier wedding bands has
reunited after 14 years and is touring the U.S. The band, Kabile
(pronounced KA-bee-lay), a group of six virtuoso performers of
Bulgarian folk instruments and vocals from Thrace in Southern
Bulgaria, will appear in Boulder County at two festive events.The first is the Boulder International Folk Dancers' fall party on
Friday, September 26th, at the Pearl Street Studio. Kabile will
perform a short concert followed by open folk dancing. Not a dancer?
Not a problem! Non-dancers are welcome and will enjoy listening and
watching these amazing musicians and the folk dancers. A flyer is

evening of Bulgarian dance and music at the Altona Grange west of
Longmont. This is an opportunity to visit with the members of Kabile
in an informal setting to learn about their music, instruments and
traditions. Lamb Kababs (Souvlaki), Spinach and Feta Pie
(Spanokopita), Stuffed Grape Leaves (Dolmas), and Roasted Vegetables
(Briam) will be served by Donald's Balkan Kitchen. Traditional Balkan
Desserts will be provided by TheBaklavaGuy.com Kabile will perform
after the dinner.Come and enjoy the great rhythms of this culture, experience the
sounds of centuries-old instruments, the colorful costumes, and

ABOUT KABILE:
This multi-talented group of six musicians from Thrace, in southern
Bulgaria, played together for nearly 20 years until two key members
emigrated to the U.S. in 1995, after the collapse of the various
Communist regimes in Eastern Europe.In late 2007, the two émigrés, Nikolay and Donka Koleva, returned to
Bulgaria to record Kabile Reunion with their former band members and
arrange for this U.S. tour.'Kabile Traditional Wedding Band' was formed in 1978 and became one of
the most popular bands in Thrace. Based in the city of Yambol, the
group took its name from the village of Kabile, where they performed
one of their earliest gigs. The group specializes in performing
native music on traditional village instruments, resulting in an
acoustic experience quite different from that played on Western
instruments influenced by American jazz.The band plays all the instruments of a traditional Bulgarian village
band: The gaida, a bagpipe made of goat skin and pipes; the tapan, a
large wooden drum covered with sheep or goat skin and played with two
specially designed drumming sticks; the kaval, a wooden flute; the
gadulka, a pear-shaped folk fiddle. As a "modern" addition (c. 1832),
the Bulgarian folk band also includes the accordion.Each of the band's six members serves as an outstanding representative
of his or her musical specialty.Dzhenko Andreev (gaida), a graduate of the Filip Koutev High School of
Music in Kotel, Bulgaria, has been a member of the Sliven Ensemble for
over 20 years and has toured with them internationally.Ivan Handzhiev (vocals, accordion) is also a graduate of the Filip
Koutev High School of Music and the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine
Arts in Plovdiv. He served on the faculty of Filip Koutev High School
as a music instructor for more than 25 years.Angel Krastev (tapan) was born and raised in Yambol. He learned to
play tapan from the village masters and has been a soloist with the
Yambol Ensemble since 1973.Nikolay Doktorov (kaval) is a graduate of the Filip Koutev High School
of Music and the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts. He serves on
the faculty of the High School 'Anton Strashimirov' in Varna,
Bulgaria, and conducts several regional ensembles in Varna.Nikolay Kolev (gadulka) graduated from the prestigious Musical
Folklore High School in Shiroka Luka. He is considered one of the
foremost gadulka players in the world. He has played with various
prize-winning ensembles and accompanied many well-known singers.Donka Koleva also graduated from the Musical Folklore High School in
Shiroka Luka and has performed with various ensembles. She has been a
featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio and Television.Since emigrating to the U.S. in 1995, Nikolay Kolev and Donka Koleva
have played an active role in fostering Bulgarian music across the
country. Based in New York City, they teach workshops in their
respective fields and perform solo, together, and as a quartet with
