Applications due soon for Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships and World Peace Fellowships

Application dates are approaching for Rotary International’s World Peace Fellowships and Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Ambassadorial Scholarships honor Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris. They provide grants of $25,000 to help scholars study for one year at the master's degree level at a university away from their home countries.

The newer Peace Fellowships provide a two-year payment of $25,000 per year, allowing postgraduate study of issues related to furthering world peace. Special programs are offered at selected universities worldwide.

Application date for Ambassadorial Scholarships is April 15 and for Peace Fellowships May 3.

To apply for the scholarships, applicants:

·         Must be a citizen of a country with Rotary clubs.

·         Must have completed at least three years of college-level course work or equivalent professional experience.

·         May NOT be a Rotarian or direct descendant of a Rotarian.

·         Should be proficient in the language of instruction in the proposed host country.

·         Must be available for an in-person interview in late August 2010.

Three young women who addressed the Boulder Rotary Club recently are examples of some of the achievements of these scholarship winners.

Jennifer Byrd, the newest member of the Vocal Music Department at the University of Colorado’s College of Music, was an Ambassadorial Scholar in Germany, which led to experiences that furthered her singing career.

Adrian Davis, major gifts development officer for the Denver Rescue Mission, served as a Rotary International Peace Fellow, studied in five countries on promoting world peace before returning home to Colorado.

Janelle Weissman of Boulder recently graduated from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, with a master’s degree in international studies as a Rotary World Peace Fellow. She plans a career working toward cross-cultural cooperation and understanding. Before her move to Brisbane, Weissman served in Boulder as executive director of Social Venture Partners Boulder County, a fund of The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County, and the Rita and Harold Divine Foundation. She now works with Human Ventures, in Brisbane, as its director of partnerships and development.

“These are remarkable programs for remarkable people,” as one Rotarian said.
