BOULDER, CO –January 31, 2020:  Homewatch CareGivers of Boulder County presented Susan Finnegan,61, of Longmont with the 2020 Leslie Weidner Award for Excellence in Caregiving. The award was given to Mrs. Finnegan in recognition of her ten-year dedication to providing exceptional care for clients.

Since 2010, Finnegan has worked for the company as a personal care provider, helping her clients stay safe and maintain independence at home. Susan was inspired by her grandmother whom she was very close with and spent a lot of time with. “I really missed my Grandmother after she died in 2008. I decided to go back to school and get a social work certificate with an emphasis in elder care. While I was attending classes I heard about Homewatch CareGivers and felt it would be a good way for me to get involved with the elder population and to honor my grandmothers’ memory.”

Director of Operations, Andrea Bertelsen said, “Susan has been a phenomenal piece to our success since she started back in 2010. Her loyalty and especially her attention to detail is what sets her apart. Clients lover her from the start and that is why she has been with our client, Gary Mahlman, for six years. Susan also helps us out in the field with care management and ensures that our clients are getting the quality of care they deserve.”

To this day, Susan continues to work with Gary. Gary says, “Susan is such a good worker and friend. She comes every week and I know she’ll always be here for me. Susan and I go shopping at King Soopers and Walgreens and she cleans my apartment so well. I’m very glad Susan has been here by my side for six years.”

The expressed feelings by Gary are very mutual with Susan. “I enjoy being with people and I want to make a positive impact. Gary is probably the gentlest, sweetest person I’ve ever known. Although I began working with Homewatch to be around the elderly population, Gary is a few years younger than me! He and I both grew up in the era of really good music and share an appreciation for the sounds of the 70’s and early 80’s. Gary amazes me with his ability to remember musical facts and artists. I have a family member who suffers from the same challenges that Gary has. Being with Gary helps me to understand those challenges better. Gary gives me hope for a happy future for my family member.”

The Leslie Weidner Memorial Award for Excellence in Caregiving was established by Homewatch CareGivers of Boulder County in January of 2007 in memory of their managing nurse, Leslie Weidner.  Each January, a Homewatch caregiver is selected who embodies the compassion, dedication and kindness that Mrs. Weidner brought to Boulder seniors for over twenty years.  Mrs. Weidner lost her battle with breast cancer in December of 2006.
