BOULDER – Boulder Rotary has received the Paul Harris Award for Excellence as the club that best meets the goals of the Rotary International President and the District 5450 District Governor.

The award trophy is a lifesize bust of Rotary founder Paul Harris that will grace the club’s meeting room this year. It was given at the District Conference in Colorado Springs this month.

Singled out for special mention in making the award were the club's fundraising for Rotary’s Polio Plus Challenge, a Memorandum of Understanding between Boulder Valley Schools and local Rotary clubs that allows promoting youth programs through the YMCA, promoting membership growth, and participation in numerous local and international programs. Also noted was a three-year grant from the Boulder Rotary Club Foundation to Crayons to Calculators.

District 5450’s Scott Metcalf Award, presented by the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club, went to one of those international projects, Boulder Rotary’s Primary School Feeding project in Kisumu, Kenya, Boulder’s newest sister city. Rotarian Darryl Brown is using funds raised by the club to supply 500 chickens, nine dairy goats, a livestock shelter and feed, and a source of porridge flour mix that will provide an orphanage in Kisumu with a sustainable food supply.

Also honored at the conference were Jean and Dick Bedell, featured speakers telling about their work in developing the Institute of Palliative Care in India. Dick, a retired physician, and Jean, a retired nurse, have made several trips to India to assist local medical personnel in providing palliative care, a medical activity not yet widespread in India.
