Broomfield Squash Players at the 2009 CO State Squash Championships

This year's 2009 Colorado State Squash Championships were held at the Denver Athletic Club the weekend of April 24. Kyle Bacalzo, an eighth grader at Broomfield Heights Middle School, and his father Dean Bacalzo attempted to defend their state titles from 2008.

In an effort to gain more tournament experience, Kyle Bacalzo entered both the junior and men's 3.0 divisions this year. Kyle lost only one game in three matches on his way to defending his junior title for 2009. The men's 3.0 division proved to be a bit more difficult as he faced much harder hitting players. He nonetheless made his way to the final round, but lost against a more experienced and stronger player.

Dean Bacalzo, playing in the 4.0 division advanced to the final round where he battled not only an excellent player, but also fatigue. Dean lost in three straight games: 11-4, 11-6, 12-10.

Dean is in the process of building a junior squash development program in Colorado with the assistance of US Squash. The squash program will start with three clubs, Boulder, Lakewood, and Parker, and is set to start later this summer. Boys and girls, 10 - 18, of any experience level are welcome. If you are interested in the program or have any questions about squash, please contact Dean at: dbacalzo@mscd.edu
