BOULDER – Darla Schueth is president of the Boulder Rotary Club for the 2009-2010 Rotary year.

Schueth, executive director of HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties since 2001, also joined Rotary that year. She was inducted as president on Friday, July 10, by Rotary District Governor Mike Oldham, along with newly elected officers and directors.

Schueth is a registered nurse with an MBA and has led hospices in Washington, D.C. and in Greeley. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and as President of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Center for Hospice and Palliative Care. She was the recipient of the Women Who Light the Community Award from the Boulder Chamber of Commerce in 2005.

Other officers are Michael Weatherwax, president-elect, who will lead the club in 2010-2011; Peter Ewing, past president, who ended his one-year term as president on Friday; and Diana Royce Smith, secretary-treasurer, who succeeded Weatherwax in that post. New directors are Sue Deans, Frances Draper, John Sullivan and Jack Thompson, who join Norma Ekstrand, Carol Ann Fullmer, Gail Mock and Bill Mooney on the board.

Ewing gave the following awards during the transition ceremony:

Lifetime Achievement Awards: Richard Meckley, who joined Rotary in 1972, served as club president in 1983-84, and is retired as president of National State Bank in Boulder. He is a former Boulder city councilman. Within Rotary, he is best known for his years of support of Boulder TEC. Michael Weatherwax, who joined Boulder Rotary in 1988, served as club secretary-treasurer for 10 years and will become club president in 2010-2011. He has an accounting firm, Weatherwax and Associates, in Boulder.

Rotarian of the Year: Darryl Brown traveled to Kisumu, Kenya with his daughter several years ago, and found impoverished orphans who could not stay in school because they needed to scavenge for food each day. A goat pen and a chicken house were built and 500 chickens and nine goats bought with financial help from Boulder Rotary and donated labor from the Kisumu Rotary Club. Also, a small factory that processed cereal grains for porridge was purchased and the orphans now have a daily source of eggs, porridge and milk, allowing them to stay in school and ultimately become productive citizens.

Humanitarian Award: Bob Sievers, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Colorado, joined Boulder Rotary in 2003. He is a fellow at CU’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and a regent emeritus at CU. His research has led to development of needle-free inhalation administration of vaccines and drugs, which will simplify vaccination programs in developing countries and make them less expensive.

Rotary International Presidential Theme Award: Al Stormo, a Boulder plastic surgeon, has traveled to remote and impoverished areas since the 1970s, including Bolivia, Madagascar and China, where he has performed reconstructive surgeries for dozens of people with deformities such as cleft palate and cleft lip. His work restores dignity to people who would otherwise become social outcasts.

Service Above Self Award: Bill and Betty Fischer, a married couple who are both Rotarians, represent Rotary at numerous community functions, including Community Food Share, the Bolder Boulder and the Buffalo Bicycle Classic. Bill has served on the Board of Directors and on the Board of the Boulder Rotary Foundation. Betty is active on the Club Caring Committee, developing and printing a selection of greeting cards used to honor and comfort club members.
