Erie Airport Economic Development Council Announces Town Fair Events

The EAEDC, Friends of Erie Airport, The Spirit of Flight Museum and Erie Airport Businesses Invite the Public to Visit May 16

Events in conjunction with the Erie Town Fair sure to appeal to young and old

Erie, Colo. — The Erie Airport Economic Development Council (EAEDC) (www.eaedc.com) announces a variety of special, family-friendly activities planned for Saturday, May 16, as part of the Erie Town Fair (www.erieco.gov).

The day begins with the 6:00 a.m. launch of 60 hot air balloons from the Colorado National (formerly Vista Ridge) Golf Club (www.coloradonationalgolfclub.com), which sits just east of the Erie Airport. Visitors can come to the airport after the launch, or watch the launch from the airport, where they can enjoy a pancake breakfast hosted by the Friends of Erie Airport starting at 7:00 a.m. They can also enjoy a great view of another aerial event: a fly-in of many private airplanes to the airport.

“We’ve invited any interested private pilots to participate in the fly-in, and we expect a great turnout,” said Gordon Page, director of the Spirit of Flight Museum (www.spiritofflight.com) and EAEDC member. “This is a unique opportunity for visitors to get an up-close look at the wide variety of planes that commonly use our airport, while they enjoy a great breakfast and conversation with others from the community.”

In addition, visitors will have the chance to tour the Spirit of Flight Museum, and enjoy a ride in a Beech T-42 transport/trainer plane, in exchange for a donation to the museum. “The plane will be available from 7 to 10 a.m., and anyone can hop in for a flight to get a bird’s-eye view of the area,” said Page. A WWII-era tractor will also be on hand, pulling a commuter shuttle to transport families back and forth between the airport and museum.

Visitors will also get to see the latest additions to the museum collection and learn about a large mural in the works, depicting a WWII airfield base by nationally recognized aviation artist Joe Jones. Jones will be on hand to discuss the project, including a scale rendering of what the finished mural will look like. Visitors can also participate in a contest to name the mural.

Parking is available at the airport and the museum for the balloon launch, pancake breakfast, T-42 flights and museum tours.

The museum will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., and will also have a public exhibit downtown at the Erie Town Fair opening at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., sponsored by the Friends of Erie Airport, EAEDC and the Spirit of Flight Museum. A static airplane will be on display, along with information from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (www.aopa.org), temporary wings tattoos and other fun giveaways and things to see. Erie Town Fair events happen in historic downtown Erie and Coal Creek Park, with Cheeseman Street to the north, Briggs Street to the west, Moffat Street to the south and Kattell Street to the east.

All events are part of EAEDC's community outreach as the group works to maintain and grow business use of the airport and to increase the airport’s already-substantial impact on the region’s economy.

About the EAEDC
The Erie Airport Economic Development Council was founded by a group of community leaders and local businesses with the mission of maximizing the value of the Erie Municipal Airport for taxpayers/owners and area-wide users. EAECD members and supporters see the potential of the airport to function as an even larger economic engine than it already is. Positioning the airport as a business-friendly facility will help bring to life EAEDC's vision of creating more high-paying aviation-related jobs on and adjacent to the airport grounds that generate real estate and sales tax revenue for the Town of Erie.

EAEDC welcomes interest from any and all companies that are looking for their next home. The Erie Municipal Airport has a unique and desirable location between Denver and Boulder with beautiful views and a growing town filled with amenities.
