For the first time the Fairview High School math team won both the team and individual competitions at the annual Colorado State University Math Day, held on November 6, 2008. Each year since 1977 the CSU mathematics department has hosted more than 300 of the top Colorado high school students from more than 60 schools for a day of mathematics competition. The team component features a college-bowl-style contest with three-member teams, and the individual component features a challenging PROBE (Problems Requiring Original and Brilliant Efforts) written examination. Winning first and second place in the PROBE exam were Fairview High School students Ben Alpert and Charles Xu, who were awarded college scholarships and an HP workstation. Members of the Fairview High School teams that won first place and third place in the team competition also included Alex Black, Catherine Chen, Cissy Chen, Will Conway, Eric Eisenberg, Chris Guthrie, Nicolas Ledru, Victor Li, Nikola Maksimovic, Hao Qiu, Mutian Yao, and Jeremy Young.
