June 25, 2012

Boulder, Colorado—Frasier Meadows Retirement Community, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, Colorado, is hosting “As You Were”-- a Veterans Recognition Breakfast on Thursday, June 28, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Second Floor Dining Room.

This event honors the approximately 80 Frasier residents who have given their time in service to their country.  These residents include veterans such as John Groff, who was the Arresting Gear Officer on the USS Bismarck Sea, an Escort Carrier of the United States Navy. On February 21, 1945, The Bismarck was sunk off of Iwo Jima by two Kamikaze planes.  In the ensuing chaos, John was assembling his men and fighting fires when orders came to abandon ship. Three destroyers and three destroyer escorts rescued survivors for the next 12 hours.  318 men were lost, 605 survived.

Robin Powelson is a Frasier resident who volunteered during and following World War II through the American Friends Service Committee in Bad Aibling Children's village in Germany.  There she lived and worked in a camp with 500 orphaned children who would be immigrating to the USA, Australia and Canada.  Most of the children were from Eastern Europe and many were Jewish.

These and other Frasier residents will be honored at the breakfast on Thursday.  Frasier President and CEO, Tim Johnson, will provide the welcome and comments followed by highlights of the distinguished military careers of several Frasier residents.  There will be a piano performance by Dean Boal, Frasier resident and former president of Interlochen Center for the Arts.  The public is invited to attend.
