Outdoor experiences are a critical part of any child’s education, and the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) has designed a series of educational programs specifically for students who are homeschooled.
Located at the northern tip of Barr Lake State Park, just 30 miles east of downtown Denver on Interstate 76, the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is a perfect place for children to explore the outdoors, learn about birds and their habitats, and have experiences in the arts and literature as well. RMBO’s programs for 2010 each provide a full morning of activities at a cost of just $5 per child. Parents are welcome to attend the programs with their child, or students can be dropped off at RMBO’s headquarters, a 110-year-old farmhouse at 14500 Lark Bunting Lane, Brighton.
Classroom programs include Avian Wonders on Jan. 20, focusing on how birds have adapted to eat in their specific habitats, and Magnificent Migration on Feb. 24, including exercises in graphing and mapping migration data. Each of these programs will also take children outside to explore the habitats around Barr Lake. RMBO will also offer three bird hikes during the spring for homeschoolers. The field trips will not only help children discover the birds that live or pass through their backyards, but also help them learn about bird characteristics, adaptations and coexistence with people.
For more information about RMBO’s homeschool programs, go to www.rmbo.org and follow the education links, or contact Cassy Bohnet, RMBO education assistant, at 303-659-4348, ext. 15. Please register your student at least two weeks prior to each program.
RMBO is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to conserve birds and their habitats. RMBO uses a full-circle approach, involving science, education and stewardship, to achieve bird conservation. RMBO provides scientific data for use as a foundation for conservation action, including land and species management strategies, and strives to engage citizens in connecting with nature and pursuing conservation in their own backyards.
