My name is Kirsten Buchholz-Mays. When the weather is nice I pick my daughter Julia and her friend Alex up from Kindergarten at Ryan Elementary and we walk home on the Coal Creek Trail. We live in the Autumn Meadows sub-division off Hwy 42. The first day we did this, as we walked over the bridge that lead us to where the paved trail begins to becomes parallel to Hwy 287, the kids noticed a lot a trash and began to pick it up. I of course was the trash bag! Luckily that day one of the trash items was a garbage bag, which the kids promptly filled up. Well now whenever we walk home, we stop and have lunch along the creek, play for awhile and pick up trash on our way home. We now always bring a wagon and our own trash bags. These two six year olds have taken it upon themselves to do this and have taken such great pride in keeping that stretch of the trail clean. It also makes them so sad that each and every time we go out, we come back with a full garbage bag of trash. I am writing to you today because I think these two little kids need some sort of recognition. I took pictures of them with their haul from our last outing. Let me know if there is any other information that you would like about them. They are Julia Mays, age 6 and Alex Lepetsos, age 6, both are kindergartners at Ryan Elementary in Lafayette.
