Mom of two honored as Rotary outstanding adult learner

June 19, 2009

BOULDER – Samjhana Karkee, a native of Nepal, has been honored by Boulder Rotary as an outstanding adult learner.

Karkee is a student in the GED class at Boulder Valley Family Literacy Program, attending four evening classes a week. She also attends two daytime classes a week at BouldeReads!, works once a week with a tutor, works part-time at two different jobs and takes care of her family – her husband and two young children. Her teacher at the Family Literacy Program, Roseanne Kolodenko, accompanied her and introduced her to the club.

Karkee noted that it took her several years to join the literacy program while she found a way to balance her family, work and studies. She encourages other mothers to take classes and not to think that they have no time and that it is too hard.

In speaking to the club she said, “Nothing is impossible, but it takes time to achieve success … The literacy program works for every adult who has academic dreams. My plan is to go to nursing school after I get my GED. I know I am still far from my goal. I endeavor to try my best. Thank you.”

The Rotary Club honors four adult learners each year with quarterly awards.
