New Lafayette theatre company offers Clown Camp for Kids, first production

Public Works Theatre Company is setting up shop in Lafayette, offering professional theatrical productions and educational programs for family audiences with its first show and kids’ clown camp this summer.

The new company’s mission is to “create new and exuberant theatre for families to engage our wonder, delight and curiosity,” according to founder and artistic director Sondra Blanchard of Lafayette. “Our education programs nurture creativity, self-awareness and ensemble play.”

Public Works’ first production, “Wanda & The Wave,” will open in Boulder on June 21-23 at The Wesley Chapel, and show in Lafayette on July 13-14 at The Mary Miller Theater. This whimsical tale about appreciating the world around us will be told through puppetry and is adapted by Blanchard from the children’s book The Old Woman and The Wave by Shelley Jackson.

The show will feature live music scored by local virtuoso musician Brian Mullins of Eldorado Springs, a founding member of the popular local bands Colcannon and Laughing Hands. Shoshana Bass of Boulder, who has worked with the internationally renowned Sandglass Theater, is collaborating with Blanchard on the show’s development and puppet design, as well as performing.

In July, Public Works Theatre Company is offering its “Clown Mini-Camp for Kids” to “explore the fine art of silliness.” Campers will learn traditional clown pieces and present their own showing on the last day of camp. There will be two sessions for different age groups: Session 1 will run July 8-12 for ages 5-8 and Session 2 will run July 15-19 for ages 9-12. The camp will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Lafayette, and registration is currently open.

Blanchard, who has been performing, teaching and making new theatre for the past 25 years, is an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University and UNC Greeley, and holds an MFA in Theatre: Contemporary Performance from Naropa University. She is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz and the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre, and previously worked as an actor and founded two theatre companies in Philadelphia before relocating to Colorado.

Locally, Blanchard has performed with companies including The Catamounts, Band of Toughs, Zen Cabaret and Theatre V, and she has taught at the Arvada Center, Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids and The Art Underground, as well as other local schools. She recently earned a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach for a semester in Greece in 2014.
