Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s Eve can be times of celebration for pet owners. But those holidays can be dangerous for their pets. Many pet owners don’t realize that items commonly associated with year-end holidays can poison or injure their animals.
Veterinarian Lee Woods, hospital director of Broadway Animal Hospital in Boulder, has posted a brief video on the Internet to educate pet owners on how to recognize potential dangers and keep their pets healthy this season.
“Our clients seek information online, so we want to give them pet health updates they can easily access,” Woods said. The video is available on the Broadway Animal Web site, YouTube and MySpace. “The holidays bring new objects, like packages and tinsel, into pets’ homes. Since pets are prone to investigate and explore and they don’t have manual dexterity like humans, they pick up materials with their mouths. That can expose their mucous membranes to poisons that could quickly spread throughout their systems.”
Woods says he created the video because his animal hospital treats numerous poisoned or injured animals every holiday season. “I’m inviting all animal lovers to view the video online and learn the five things all pet owners should know to help their pets avoid holiday dangers,” says Woods.
