BOULDER, Colorado (September 13, 2010)- “Possibilities for Our Time” will act as a kick-off and recruiting event for one of CU-Boulder's newest student groups: the Student Center for Social Innovation (SCSI). The
evening will feature five prestigious performers and speakers who are working
in Colorado and around the globe on social ventures for sustainable
development. 


“Possibilities for Our Time” will showcase local leaders who are truly changing the world through literacy, entrepreneurship, music, microfinance and people-to-people diplomacy.  “Possibilities for Our Time” and the new Student Center for
Social Innovation will show students that they have the potential to make a
difference.


The Student Center for Social Innovation is an outgrowth of the University of Colorado-Boulder’s designation as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus. Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs officially recognizes CU-Boulder as a leader in social entrepreneurship education.


“Possibilities for Our Time” will feature Boulder-area leaders who will present overviews of their social innovations:


Linda Smith, the Founder and Director of Reading Village will speak about working collaboratively with residents in impoverished villages in Guatemala. Reading Village’s programs include book donations, scholarships, and literacy programs.


Karen Larson, Executive Director of Friendship Bridge’s Guatemalan and US operations will highlight Friendship Bridge’s work on alleviating poverty through microfinance and microenterprise development.


Daniel Epstein, the Co-Founder and President of the Unreasonable Institute 
will speak about enabling young, promising entrepreneurs to launch socially responsible and life-enhancing ventures.


Fara Tolno, the Director of Kissidugu and Project Drum, will discuss bringing West African music and dance to Boulder and his aim to build a School of Music, Dance and Education in Guinea, West Africa.  


Françoise Poinsatte of Boulder Jalapa Friendship City Projects will highlight peace-building and people-to-people diplomacy between the people of Nicaragua and Colorado.


WHEN: “Possibilities for Our Time” will take place Friday, September 17, 2010 from 6-8:30pm. It will begin with West African percussion and continue with the speakers'
presentations, including question and answer breaks. Snacks will be provided.


WHERE: Glenn Miller Ballroom, UMC. (1669 Euclid Ave, Boulder CO 80309). Parking is

available in the Euclid Autopark.


The event is free and open to the public.
