The Golden West Gurlz, a dance team of ladies ranging in age from 69-86, quickly became a sensation last year after their inaugural performance at a CU women’s basketball game in January. They went on that year to perform at a CU men’s game, a 14ers basketball game in Broomfield, and for a group of Longmont seniors. Of course, they were also a hit at the Annual Talent Show at Golden West, the senior living Community in Boulder that they call home.
This year, they are back in full force and causing quite the commotion again! The Gurlz were invited to perform at halftime of the CU men’s basketball game against Kansas, the highest selling game of the year! They were a hit once again and also performed at the CU women’s game against Nebraska. Featured on Channel 9 News, the Gurlz are gaining popularity on the internet via their YouTube video. They are slated to perform at another 14ers game too, still to be scheduled.
This year they are dancing to George Thoroughgood’s “Bad to the Bone” and the hip hop hits “Pumps and a Bump” by MC Hammer, and “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls. Although this is not their style of music (they prefer Glenn Miller), they enjoy the crowd’s reaction when these “mature” women hit the dance floor to “shake it” to these teenage favorites.
These six women are full of zest, spirit, and of course, a fantastic sense of humor! They have become quite a unit through this experience together, and have served as a model for all of us that life does not stop (or even slow down!) in the “golden” years!
