The origins of Broomfield FISH go back more than 49 years when ladies from six Broomfield churches organized to help the needy members of the community. The Have-A-Heart project was started in 1996 by a concerned individual who wanted to help a homeless family. On Saturday, July 28th and Monday, July 30th, that same spirit was demonstrated as four local churches worked together to replenish the shelves at FISH and Have-A-Heart.

As part of a concerted effort to provided needed supplies to the food banks, congregations from Broomfield United Methodist Church, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter,  Wesleyans, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - Westminster Stake conducted food drives. Several of the congregations participated as part of a Colorado Cares Day service project. Another church already had their own project scheduled as part of their on-going charitable work.

In addition, the Mayors and city officials in Broomfield and Westminster set up collection boxes in their buildings to increase donations.

Leaders of the church congregations requested donations from their members who also invited their neighbors to donate nonperishable food, personal hygiene items, and cleaning supplies. Neighbors were given paper grocery bags, donated from King Soopers and Target, and asked to contribute what they could. Those generous contributions were then picked up by the members and delivered to FISH on Saturday and Monday. Over 1000 bags were distributed.

Many of the same volunteers who delivered the contributions stayed at FISH to help sort the donations into various categories to ease the work of other FISH volunteers who stock the shelves. They were joined by Broomfield Mayor Pat Quinn and his daughters. By noon, the storage areas and halls were filled with the donated goods. In total, 6400 pounds of goods were donated.

At the same time at Have-A-Heart in Westminster a parallel effort was taking place. Westminster Mayor Nancy McNally joined with her city council (Faith Winter, Herb Atchison, Bob Briggs, Mark Kaiser, Mary Lindsey, and Scott Major) and the churches in collecting donations across their city and then sorting them on Saturday morning. About 230 grocery bags and 90 boxes of goods were donated at Have-A-Heart (estimated 3000 to 4000 pounds).

A friendly competition was held between the two mayors to see who could get the most donations. In the end, both FISH and Have-A-Heart emerged as the winners.
