This is a tough question for most people out there. I know it is for my husband and me. Most of us are impacted by some organization or another, for example: My father has diabetes, my husband’s grandmother has MS, a dear friend of mine is on the verge of losing her husband to Cancer, my children attend public school and boy do they need funding. The list goes on as I know it does for you. My rule of thumb is that I do what I can when asked, because I’m not going to say that one thing is more important than another. If you choose to stick to your one commitment and that is it; I feel that is a wonderful contribution…you’re giving!
However, I would like to discuss a cause that I think gets overlooked far too often and maybe it’s because its name really is scarier than ‘Cancer’, ‘Diabetes’ or ‘MS’. I would like to discuss CHILD ABUSE. The statistics around child abuse are staggering and truly depressing. In Adams County alone over 6,700 cases of child abuse will be investigated annually. Child Abuse is reported on an average of every 10 seconds. Nationally, CAC’s provided services to 266,480 children from January 2010 to December 2010 (*Statistics found on National Children’s Alliance website). The most common occurring abuse was sexual abuse and the most common age range of victims is the 0 – 6 year olds. Three children die every day as a result of such abuse. Sadly, Colorado has one of the highest rates of child abuse in the country. Colorado ranks 3rd in the nation for deaths resulting from child abuse (according to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, NCANDS). To make matters worse, Colorado's state funding to help battle child abuse ranks among the lowest in the nation.
I ask, “Who is speaking up for these kids?”
There is North Metro Children’s Advocacy Center (NMCAC). NMCAC was established to aid law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, medical professionals, and mental health professionals by providing a warm and safe environment to conduct the incredibly sensitive work required in abuse and neglect investigations. In 2010 the NMCAC provided services to 458 child victims and their non-offending family members. The NMCAC is a 501c3 non-profit agency and relies heavily on corporate sponsorships and private donations to maintain its facility in Northglenn, CO. Advocacy Center’s play an important role in all of their communities; most importantly NMCAC is the one and only Advocacy Center for Adams and Broomfield Counties.
As I discussed earlier, I am quite certain that you, like me, receive a plethora of requests to attend “charity functions” or are asked by close friends to contribute to their personal causes. Most of these are larger, national organizations working to cure debilitating diseases. In this case, I am asking you to help your community. This is your backyard! Based on currently available statistics, you or someone you know has already been or will be a victim of abuse. The NMCAC exists to help us all. I invite you to visit our web-site (www.nmcac.org) for information on a variety of ways to help; monetarily, volunteering your time and by just learning about the Center and child abuse.
I was told by a detective in the Crimes Against Children's unit that they say "Child abuse does happen - spread the word....” You may contact me directly at cariesweck@gmail.com to get a list of current community events that are planned and for a list of ways you can help. I thank you for your time!
Sincerely,
Carie Sweckard
