The Lumonics School of Light Art, founded by Dorothy Tanner, opened in North Denver in October, 2018.
Students are guided in an intimate studio setting to create their own one-of-a-kind light sculpture which they will take home after the fourth class. Some knowledge of shop tools is recommended although not required. Students do what is comfortable for them. Marc Billard, the instructor and co-director of the School, will do the construction for any step if requested. Dorothy Tanner makes unscheduled visits to check on everyone’s progress.
Importantly, you do not need to be an artist to take this course, but will feel more artistic and confident of your artistic abilities when the class concludes. Just walking into the studio/gallery fires the imagination.
It is a 12-hour course, made up of four 3-hour sessions on consecutive Saturdays. Classes are limited to 4 students so each receives a lot of personal attention.
We have a model to view, one of Dorothy’s light sculptures, to give you creative ideas. The cube is one of the building blocks of this Tanner light art form that began over 50 years ago! You will learn how to electrify your art work using LED bulbs/LED strips dependent on your project, learn what shop tools are required, and how to use them. You will add your creativity to the art work to bring it to completion on the final session.
The cost is $240 ($20 an hour) + material costs of $65 to create your light sculpture:

Here is what students are saying that recently completed the class:
My experience with the Lumonics School of Light Art was very good. The instructors and staff were knowledgeable and friendly, and the class size was small enough for each student to receive individual attention, The four sessions were structured logically to make sure that each student learned the techniques and skills required to successfully complete the artwork, while exploring an entirely new medium. I was challenged, yet always felt that I could do what was needed to succeed. at the end of the course, I was really pleased with the quality and visual appeal of the light sculpture I produced. Thank you!
