Local 6th grade Girl Scout troop cleans donated bikes for Share a Gift (SAG).

Founded in 1972, Share-A-Gift is an all-volunteer annual holiday project that seeks to provide toys and
books for less fortunate children in the Boulder Valley School District. 675 families
representing 1,710 children benefited from Share-A-Gift’s 2009 Toy Shop. We expect
there will be more families in need in 2010. This project is coordinated with the
Boulder Valley Rotary Share-A-Coat program, and the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for
Tots program. The generosity of individuals, businesses and community groups enable thousands of local parents brighten their kids’ holidays.

Families with children from birth to age fourteen are invited by school administrators, churches and other support groups to “shop” for free at Share-A-Gift’s annual Toy Shop, held this year on December 18. Parents may select games, stuffed animals, toys, crafts and books from the gently used section of the Toy Shop. They also choose a major gift – a bike or computer – or a new toy for each child. One goal of Share-A-Gift is to be anonymous so that the gifts come from the parents.

Bikes are collected at elementary schools in the fall. Before the Toy Shop, bicycle mechanics from local bicycle shops gather to make sure every bike is working, and is safe. Their work definitely goes faster when the bike has been cleaned by the deft hands of this Girl Scout Troop!
