Ric Rojas Girls Win 4x800 Meter Relay
Boys 3rd and 6th in 4 x800 and Girls 6th in Sprint Medley

On the eve of the Simplot Games finals last Friday night Fairview sophomore Emma Sanchez, the anchor leg on Ric Rojas Running’s Simplot Games 4 x 800-meter Relay team, had a dream that her team would win the finals Saturday morning.
“My coach, Ric Rojas, asked me what I dreamed about,” said Sanchez. “I replied ‘I had a dream that our girls 4x800 would win, and I told Ric that dream will come true today!’ “
“Little did I know that I spoke the truth,” she continued. “We went into the race thinking of placing only in the top six, and we ended up running a perfect race to win! What a way to end Simplot Games!” Team Rojas’ winning time was 9:44.30
Sanchez and her teammates enjoyed their brief stay on the awards podium and she earned a second visit to the podium after helping teammates Maura O’Brien and Allison Aafedt (Evergreen High), and Katie Kowal (Fairview High) to 6th in the Sprint Medley Relay.
Sanchez’ twin brother, Rich, followed his sister to the awards podium, anchoring his team to the Bronze Medal in the Boys 4 x 800-meter Relay (8:15.79). Sanchez teammates were Centaurus High School’s Alani Estrella and Chandler Reid and Evergreen’s Jackson Sayler.
Joining Ric Rojas “A” team on the Podium was the Rojas “B” squad whose Boulder’s Tucker Hampson, Evergreen’s Sam Sahli, Fairview’s Nate Gilbert and Chatfield’s Graham Williams scrapped their way to a 6th place finish (8:24.42).
Nederland’s 7-time state-champion, Kelley Robinson, battled her way through a crowded girls field to take the Bronze-Medal in the 1600-meters (5:04.49). She had earlier contributed a fine leg in the winning 4 x 800-meter Relay.
“I’m happy with my race,” said Robinson. “We really wanted (to win) that ‘4 x 8’ today and I was willing to take my chances in the ‘1600’. We ended up winning
the Relay and I got 3rd in the ‘16’ so I am happy and relieved.
“I can’t say enough good things about this group,” said head coach Ric Rojas. “Their enthusiasm, focus, and persistence over the past 10-weeks really paid off. I am really excited about returning to the Simplot Games next year with some of our veterans and a new crop of athletes.”
Ric Rojas Running team members attend ten area high schools and train at the University of Colorado’s Balch Field House from December through February.
